In a few Enchylraeidae and Lumbriculidae the spermathecae open at the distal extremity into the oesophagus, which is a fact difficult of explanation.
Among the aquatic Oligochaeta and many earthworms (the families Lumbricidae, Geoscolicidae and a few other genera) the spermathecae are simple structures, as has been described.
It is a remarkable fact, not yet understood, that in certain Enchytraeidae and Lumbriculidae the spermathecae open into the oesophagus as well as on to the exterior.

Lumbriculus variegatus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Although superficially resembling tubifex worms, Lumbriculus is placed in the Order Lumbriculida, a group that is separate from both tubifex worms and earthworms, which are in the orders Tubificida and Haplotaxida, respectively (Jamieson, 1981):
Some biologists suggest that the Order Lumbriculida may be an early stem group in the oligochaete branch of annelid evolution.
But interpretations are complicated by variability in the number and location of gonads in the Lumbriculidae, a feature common in worms that reproduce asexually by fragmentation.

 Class Oligochaeta
Four families in the orders Tubificida and Lumbriculida are common in freshwater in northeastern North America: the Tubificidae, Naididae, Lumbriculidae, and Enchytraeidae.
In addition, freshwater biologists sometimes encounter lumbricine oligochaetes (order Lumbricina; the familiar earthworms), haplotaxid oligochaetes (order Haplotaxida; rare inhabitants of groundwater), Aeolosoma (class Aphanoneura; small worms once classified with the oligochaetes), and Manayunkia speciosa (class Polychaeta) in waters of northeastern North America.
These large worms are found in standing and running waters, and are ecologically somewhat similar to tubificids.

Also their life cycles seem to be very similar, but characteristic for deep waters (see below).
In the Lumbriculidae, an unknown species flock, of which two new species have been described, was detected in the genus Rhynchelmis: an endemic complex of small species based on morphological characters, including the ultrastructure of the spermatozoa, could be distinguished and maybe corresponds to a new genus.

Abstract The sperm ultrastructure of three Naididae (Paranais frici, P. litoralis and Stylaria lacustris) and two Lumbriculidae (Rhynchelmis brachycephala and R. alyonae) is decribed to supply spermatological evidence towards a better understanding of the phylogeny of the two families.
Naidid spermatozoa were found to be similar to one another, particularly with regard to the acrosome (with the acrosome tube bent to one side), and the shape and number of mitochondria.
The two lumbriculid species examined showed a characteristic conical indentation at the apex of the nucleus, a feature up to now described only in Branchiobdellida, an annelid group with possible affinities to Lumbriculidae.

Certain quantitative ratios of meiofauna were shown to be correlated with environmental data.

The oligochaete species Amphichaeta leydigii, Dero digitata and Tubifex tubifex, the resting stages of Cyclopinae, and Eucyclops serrulatus among the Eucyclopinae were most clearly concentrated in the eutrophicated or polluted environments.

Several families, Amphipoda, Lumbriculidae, Siphlonuridae, Isopoda, Sialidae, Turbellaria, Hydroptilidae, Philopotomidae, Baetiscidae, and Tricorythidae, were prevalent in sites below age 1 clearcuts whereas Coenagrionidae, Coryduligastridae, Helicopsychidae, Hydropsychidae and Polycentropodidae were most abundant in sites that were not below age 1 clearcuts.
Two mayfly families, Baetistidae and Tricorythidae, were collected exclusively at sites below age 1 clearcuts.

This course will include information on the classification of Annelida, and taxonomic differences among the families, genera and species.
Identifications of oligochaetes will include both external and internal morphological characters used to separate the species within the common families Tubificidae (Tubificinae, Naidinae), Lumbriculidae, and Enchytraeidae.
Due to time constraints, use of microscopes for identifications will not be possible, but images of oligochaetes will be projected and characters shown which will enable identification of the specimen.

 The Skeptical Aquarist
Since Lumbricus is the common earthworm, Lumbriculus, then, should be the "little earthworm." Though it's cute, the naming is a bit misleading; Lumbriculids actually comprise a separate order (Lumbriculidae) of the Oligochaetes; in other words, they're annelid worms, as earthworms are, but as different from earthworms as they both are different from tubificids.
Nevertheless, flworms are very often confused with tubificids (Tubifex and its allied species) and scorned with equal disgust by many well-informed fishkeepers.
