No, the only people who we can be sure must like the present bellicose, inflated, arrogant, hubristic, idiotic, loony contretemps must be the Great Rich, those whose bank-based fortunes swell in bad times and good, and whose children, if they have any, are insulated from thuggish crime and war.

That bit is the word “lumpeninvestoriat.” Obviously, it’s a play on Marx’s term “lumpenproletariat” - from the German “Lump” meaning “[dressed in] rags” or “scoundrel.” Only that here, it is used to denote the mass of households owning stocks.
I was uncertain if I was supposed to feel insulted by it… until I realized that the Great Wheel of Fortune (and I’m talking Fortuna, not Vanna White) that is the stock market is an equal-opportunity offender when it comes to punishing class and pretension.
