The Lumpkin County, Ga., County Commissioner has decided to remove a Ten Commandments display from the local courthouse after a threatened lawsuit by civil liberties groups.
Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Georgia affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union contacted the county to warn that legal action could result unless the Commandments display was removed.
After the Georgia Americans United chapter received complaints from local citizens, Americans United wrote to County Commissioner Charlie Ridley on Feb. 22, explaining that the display was in violation of the First Amendment of the Constitution because it amounted to government endorsement of religion.

Dahlonega was a boom town in the Georgia Gold Rush and became the site of a United States Mint branch mint between 1838 and 1861, when Confederate troops seized the facility and operations ceased.
