In the wake of the rather acrimonious breakup of his previous band, Galaxie 500, singer/guitarist Dean Wareham issued a 1991 solo EP, Anesthesia, and appeared on the brilliant Mercury Rev single "Car Wash Hair" before announcing the formation of a new band, dubbed Luna, in 1992.
Their first concert album, Luna Live, recorded at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., in December 1999 and the Knitting Factory in New York in July 2000, was issued in early 2001.
Luna wrapped up recording their sixth studio album in late 2001 and prepared it for a spring 2002 release on Jetset Records.

Luna toured the United States in the fall of 1992 and spring of 1993 opening for The Screaming Trees and the Sundays respectively, and landed the bizarre job of opening for the Velvet Underground on their European tour that summer.
Luna’s third album, Penthouse (1995), was recently deemed one of the 150 best albums of the 90s by Rolling Stone magazine.
It was released on schedule in Europe by Beggar’s Banquet, and the band were quickly signed by the Jericho label in the U.S. The album was released domestically in October,and went to Number One on the college radio charts.

In the realm of great undercurrent bands like Television, Flaming Lips, and others that are unfortunate enough to never draw a mainstream audience, even though you know they should, Luna has produced an impressive collection of albums that are as varied in style as they were in personnel over their career.
Musically explorative in an encompassing way, Luna and Dean Wareham was the ‘90s baton of earlier bands like Television, whose Tom Verlaine assisted on some music, several cuts, of which, are heard on this compilation.
The atmosphere that nurtured a band like Luna has been lost in a different kind of angst, a noisy three-chord one or a melancholic band that is lyrically bankrupt.

 Orchestra Luna
It was intended for release in the fall of 1974, but the head of CBS Records came to hear the band play and decided to add two songs that he heard during the live performance to the album (see Question #5a.) This delayed the release of the album until March/April of 1975.
This band is sometimes referred to as Orchestra Luna II (OL II) but I am not clear about whether this was the "official" name.
The demo tapes were intended for free distribution by the band's manager to potential clients, so it might be possible for me to post some MP3's of the demo tracks someday (if I am confident that it is ethical and legal to do so.) In the meantime, please don't ask me to do this.

In the case of two members of Luna, a band known for bittersweet pop, fuzzed out guitars, and dark tales of quirky love, fate worked in their favor.
Luna will appear this week at the Fox on Tuesday, September 24 and the Bluebird on Wednesday, the 25th, with the other two members, including bassist Britta Phillips, and the lead vocalist, guitarist, and founding member of the band, Dean Wareham, who launched Luna in 1992 after the break up of Galaxie 500.
It's typical that bands have more than two to three times the number of songs needed to create a new CD, so the rest of the tunes typically gets shelved until the next release or never at all.

It's also a perfect opportunity to reflect on the legacy of this seminal band, which ends its 14-year career firmly entrenched in music history, and will best be remembered as an archetype of New York hipster cool.
