Luna 24 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The last of the Luna series of spacecraft, the mission of the Luna 24 probe was the third Soviet mission to retrieve lunar soil samples (the first two missions returning samples were Luna 16 and Luna 20).
Luna 24 was the third attempt to recover a sample from the unexplored Mare Crisium (after Luna 23 and a launch failure in October 1975), the location of a large lunar mascon.
After further changes to its orbit, Luna 24 set down safely on the lunar surface at 06:36 UT on 18 August 1976 at 12°45' north latitude and 62°12' east longitude, not far from where Luna 23 had landed.

Luna 12 was launched towards the Moon from an earth-orbiting platform and achieved a lunar orbit of of 100 km x 1740 km on October 25, 1966.
Luna 16 was launched toward the Moon from a preliminary earth orbit and entered a lunar orbit on September 17, 1970.

Tracking Luna 24 from Florida and Stockholm
The major difference between Luna 24 and previous two lunar sample-return flights was the duration of the return flight from the moon.
For Luna 20 and Luna 16 the re-entry to earth was along a direct path from the moon to the earth.
In the case of Luna 24 the landing longitude was 6 degrees further east and to null out the orbital velocity of the moon less velocity for the probe was needed, resulting in a slower return trajectory.

As befits a group thinking of (their own) empire, Luna revisits one of their best songs, "Astronaut." Like the rest of the album, here it’s leaner, stronger, and slower, while "Malibu" and "Owl" display some of the finest, melodic and stripped-down guitar playing since the Feelies’ heyday.
The conventional wisdom on Luna is that their artistic peak was around "Penthouse" or "Bewitched", and that their other releases are a mixed bag not as worth pursuing.
