  The Lunar Mansions
Most lunar maps are plotted as a telescopic view, inverted and reversed, so it is difficult to correlate them with a normal view.
Usually, 28 such references were established, and they were called the Lunar Mansions, or resting-places.
Lunar Mansions were prominent in the astrology of the East, in China, India, Arabia, Egypt, Persia, central Asia, and, above all, in the Euphrates valley among the Chaldeans, where they may have originated.

Definition: [Zodiacs] The Lunar or Draconic Zodiac is a band of the heavens approximately 10° wide, centered on the ecliptic, against which the Moon is seen to move, as seen from the Earth.
I have been unable to discover how the obvious problem of the movement of the marking stars of the mansions against the Tropical Zodiac, because of the Movement of the Ages, is solved for the Arabian Lunar Mansions.
It is likely that the first mansion of the Arabian system began at a "fixed star" [perhaps Alcyone] and that the mansions were not of fixed length, accurately reflecting real asterisms seen in the heavens.

Other regions use a luni-solar calendar with months based on the lunar cycle and years of either 12 or 13 months.
Some lunar calendars start each month with a new moon, while others start each month with a full moon, and Hindu calendars don't all agree on when a year starts, either.
(Lunar days are not the same length as solar days) In some calendars, lunar months are simply numbered, not named.

 About the Luopan
Being ultimately derived from the diviner's board or shi which had the twenty-eight lunar mansions inscribed on both the Earth (base) plate and the Heaven (upper) plate, it follows that a luopan cannot be properly so called unless it has these divisions marked on it.
Not only was the position of the twenty-eight mansions different, only one of the luopans showed the year divided into 365.25 days, the others preferring a day of 360 days - one for each degree of the western draughtsman’s compass.
The reason for the discrepancy in position of the twenty-eight lunar mansions is due to the movement of the heavens.

Max Muller accepts the interpretation of the shlokas in the Bhagvat Puran, especially the phrase "the lunar mansion in the middle of these two stars (tayostumadhye Nakshatram)," as the extension of the line connecting the two stars away from the pole star.
A more plausible interpretation of the observations described in the Bhagvat puran, especially the phrase "the lunar mansion in the middle of the two stars (tayostumadhye nakshatram)" is that "the perpendicular line drawn from the midpoint of these two stars towards the ecliptic" intersects at a certain lunar mansion (nakshatra), when extended towards the ecliptic.

History of Constellation and Star Names
The origin of the system of 27 or 28 "lunar mansions" (i.e., a lunar zodiac) was the topic of considerable debate among 19th-century Orientalists.
Julius Wellhausen (Reste Arabischen Heidentums (1897)) correctly concluded that the concept of 28 "lunar mansions" was borrowed from the astronomy of the Hindus and merged with elements of Arab star lore after the introduction of Islam.
The "lunar mansions" were not actually used by the Arab-Islamic astronomers in their astronomical work.

As is usual with lunar calendars, the months have 29 or 30 days, but days may be missed out or duplicated.
The way this happens is that each month, from the moment of one Dark Moon to the next, is divided into 30 equal lunar days ( tithis), numbered 1 to 15 in the bright half, and 1 to 14, then 30 in the dark half.
The date is then the number of the lunar day current at the moment of sunrise.

The lunar mansions assume incredible importance in the Vedic system because they provide a modifying influence on the planets in a chart, and they also provide a starting point for the destiny of the individual.
The Nakshatras or lunar mansions are ruled by planets -- the Hindu system uses the seven classical planets and the North and South Lunar nodes, which are also referred to as Rahu and Ketu.
The lunar mansions are also mentioned in Western astrology several hundred years ago and are also used in Arabic and Chinese astrology, but have limited predictive utility.
