Bridgewater Town Council is currently considering a taxpayer's request that property owners be obliged to control lawn weeds with herbicides or other methods.
A town resident has complained about "weeds, especially dandelions, that are in great abundance on private and town properties." He finds it "expensive and frustrating trying to maintain a nice lawn to help in keeping the town attractive to residents and tourists." (The Bulletin and Progress Enterprise, Wednesday June 2, 1999, page 14.)
While councillors have not yet decided to act on this resident's ill-informed and dangerous proposal, the fact that they have not rejected his request outright and are taking it under consideration is extremely unsettling, and indicates a lack of understanding of the dangers of pesticides.
