 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: The Reformation
The first impulse to secession was supplied by the opposition of Luther in Germany and of Zwingli in German Switzerland to the promulgation by Leo X of an indulgence for contributions towards the building of the new St.
The leaders of the Reformation in Germany sought to win over King Francis I, for political reasons an ally of the Protestant German princes; the king, however, remained true to the Church, and suppressed the reform movements throughout his land.
Germany in particular, the original home of the Reformation, was reduced to a state of piteous distress by the Thirty Years' War, and the German Empire was thereby dislodged from the leading position which it had for centuries occupied in Europe.

 Lunenburg Dutch
“Lunenburg Dutch” is not Dutch at all, nor is it similar to “Pennsylvania Dutch”, a dialect of German.
Although Lunenburgers seem to have participated in much of the same phonemic system as the rest of southwest Nova Scotia, there is one characteristic not established in the rest of the area.
It seems as though in Lunenburg County the older generations may have used this dialect as an elite way of speaking “as a sort of cant to keep the younger folk out of their gossip and, one suspects, to give their communications an unmerited air of importance.” (Wilson, pp.51).
