British Lung Foundation - Pulmonary embolism
If a blood clot develops in the deep veins of the leg - DVT or deep vein thrombosis - some or all of it may break off, go through the heart, then block off part of the pulmonary (lung) circulation.
Small clots may cause no symptoms at all, medium ones cause sudden breathlessness, and sometimes the clot is sufficiently large to obstruct the lung circulation, leading to collapse or even sudden death without warning.
When a blood clot in the lung (or leg) has been confirmed, treatment is with a tablet called warfarin.

The Telegraph - Calcutta : KnowHOW
A PE usually results when a clot in a deep vein in the leg fragments and gets carried into one of the lungs where it grows in size and blocks blood supply to the lung.
The standard symptoms of the former include a swelling of the leg, a noticeable warmth and redness of the leg, and pain that gets worse when the patient is standing or walking.
In this a radioactive material is injected into a vein in the foot of the patient, and it is tracked via x-ray scans as it moves up through the legs, abdomen and into the lungs.

NIH/NHLBI News Release--Study Finds Ways to Improve Detection of Blood Clots in the Lung, May 31, 2006
A new study of a commonly used imaging test of the chest to detect potentially deadly blood clots in the lung shows that extending the scan to the legs – where the clots typically originate – or adding a standard clinical assessment significantly improves physicians' abilities to accurately diagnose pulmonary embolism.
Overall, the sensitivity (the ability to detect clots) of the combined chest CT and leg CT was 90 percent, compared to 83 percent sensitivity of the chest CT angiogram alone.
In some cases, there are only signs of DVT, such as swelling of the leg or along the vein in the leg, pain or tenderness in one leg, feeling of increased warmth in the area of the leg that is swollen, and red or discolored skin on the affected leg.

Clots may also occur in the lung (pulmonary embolus), sometimes following a clot in the leg, which breaks off and travels in the circulation until it lodges in part of the blood supply to the lung.
A clot in the lung may lead to shortness of breath, chest pain made worse by breathing in, or coughing up a small amount of blood.
Doctors will ask about clotting problems in the past (any history of clots in the leg or lung), previous strokes or heart attacks (and whether they occurred at young ages), less specific clues such as headaches, migraine, memory loss, and confusion.

 Pulmonary Embolism -- Topic Overview
Pulmonary embolism is the sudden blockage of an artery in the lung.
The most common cause of pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein in your leg, breaks loose, travels to the lungs, and becomes trapped in one of the smaller lung arteries.
Other substances, such as tumors, air bubbles, amniotic fluid, or fat that is released into the blood vessels, may also block an artery, but such causes are rare.

Pulmonary embolism is caused by a blocked artery in the lungs.

 Blood Clot in the Legs
Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) refers to a blood clot embedded in one of the major deep veins of the lower legs, thighs, or pelvis.
The most worrisome complications of DVT occur when a clot breaks loose (or embolizes) and travels through the bloodstream and causes blockage of blood vessels (pulmonary arteries) in the lung.
Statistics reveal that at least 200,000 patients die each year from blood clots in their lung.

Cancer Patients Run Higher Risk of Blood Clots
The risk can vary greatly depending on the type of cancer, the amount of time since the cancer diagnosis was made, whether the cancer has spread and whether the person has a hereditary mutation that affects blood clotting.
Overall, about 4 percent to 20 percent of people with deep vein thrombosis (leg clots) or pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lung) have cancer, the study authors said.
