S Leone army gears up to take key town
Lunsar was the furthest the government forces had advanced into rebel territory since civil war resumed last month, but their inability to hold their position was a blow to the morale of the often disorganised loyalist troops.
Military sources said that after the army's failure to hold Lunsar, officers from the former colonial ruler Britain were providing advice on logistics.
The peacekeepers have promised a vigorous response to any attack on Rogberi, close to a position where four Zambian UN soldiers were killed trying to defend it when rebels defied a 1999 peace accord to advance towards Freetown a month ago.

LUNSAR, 23 Mar 2005 (IRIN) - Young girls in Sierra Leone, who were traditionally circumcised at puberty, are having their clitoris cut out by secret societies at a younger and younger age, especially in the remote north of the country.
At Lunsar, a village 120 km northeast of the capital, Freetown, a group of circumcisers and their young assistants had gathered to listen to speakers from a women's rights group urge them to give up the practice.

The loss of Lunsar raises questions about the effectiveness of a motley pro-government alliance, which has been supported, trained and supplied by former colonial power Britain and backed up by a United Nations peacekeeping force.
Lunsar, on a main road from the capital Freetown to the rebel-held diamond areas in the east, has changed hands several times since rebels reneged on a 1999 peace deal in early May, capturing hundreds of U.N. peacekeepers and trying to advance on Freetown.
Government forces briefly captured Lunsar, 65 miles (105 km) northeast of Freetown, at the end of May, lost it and then retook it on June 7.

Guardian | Sierra Leone army mobilises for new push
Sierra Leonean army and militia units are striving to restore the momentum of their advance into territory held by the Revolutionary United Front, after being forced to retreat earlier this week from the town of Lunsar, 70 miles north-east of the capital.
The capture of Lunsar, represented the first government seizure of long-held RUF territory - as opposed to the retaking of land through which the rebels had advanced recently to threaten the capital, Freetown.
The taking of Lunsar encouraged those who believe that the government's forces have the capacity in the coming weeks and months to fight through many more miles of territory, taking five or six more towns on the way, and finally dislodging the RUF from the diamond areas in the east of the country.
