	Luomo: The Present Lover - PopMatters Music Review
		Finnish artist Vladislav Delay, AKA Luomo (funny how his alias sounds more Finnish than his real name, but I digress), emerged a few years ago as one of the foremost names in microhouse, his Vocalcity album delivering some stirring, spacious, minimally-arranged dance music, the hook-filled vocals weaving in and out of his bare-bones arrangements.
		The fact is, this album is more of a pop record than anyone else, Luomo pulling it off with such supreme skill, that if he were to do so, he could elevate the most mundane pop diva wannabe to goddess status in the blink of an eye.
		The new version, however, is a much tighter piece of work, as Luomo transforms it into a flat-out gem of a dance anthem that borders on straight-up house music.

		Finland's Luomo is that artist who would be the focus of an identity crisis.
		Luomo, in typically modest fashion, speaks of the "panic" he went through recording the vocals on Vocalcity, having never featured any on previous releases.
		If I didn't know better, I'd say Luomo was doing a pretty good job of presenting the over-reported sound of Scandinavia, what with its glacial momentum and tendency to replace all the rough edges with icy consonance.

		On his 2000 debut, Vocalcity, Luomo’s alternate-universe model of house reconstituted the style’s simple pulse-groove as a dense, sticky profusion of intermeshing percussion snaps and pops, syrupy dub echoes, and an array of soft-focus sonics.
		Each snare rattle or hi-hat hiss is lovingly sculpted by a multitude of barely perceptible tics and smudges, so that the grooves shimmer and flare, their seeming equilibrium the careful result of an intensely compressed molecular activity that constantly threatens to rupture the surface of the music.
		Luomo’s insistence on emotional excess and his constant flirtation with rapture demand a fully committed listener.

		Luomo, aka Vladislav Delay, is described as "driven by an ever-present inner restlessness." That's a bit of an understatement, considering Luomo's schedule for his U.S. tour includes stretches like Emo's on March 10, Toronto (still in Canada) on the 11th and Houston's Go on the 12th.
		No doubt this tireless DJ, producer and man of many pseudonyms is dedicated, but the 26-year-old Finn is much more impressive in his ability to infuse this same kind of intense immediacy into some of the chillest ambient vocal house ever.
		The second release under the Luomo moniker, "The Present Lover," is so bizarrely excellent that it manages to maintain the best aspect of disco liquid vocals while keeping the same minimalist feel of Scandinavian electronica.

		Edging close to the line that separates cheesy Euro pop and quality, inspiring dance music, the new album from Finnish born and raised Luomo has just enough decent production and a few unique vocal tracks in it to remain interesting.
		There is also a nice minimal element to the first half of the album, which unfortunately disappears on the later, less inspiring tracks.
		Luomo is worth a listen if you're looking for decent, mellow, electronic dance music that has a more traditional song structure and loads of vocals.

		After asking around it seems rumors have been afloat that the label has been in trouble and may have been hit hard after a lost distribution deal with EFA (I have know idea if any of this is true).
		In contrast to the click and cut style experiments of Delays earlier work, Vocalcity was released under the Luomo alias and was for myself one of those rare albums that engaged me in numerous ways and soon became on of my most admired albums.
		Combining a vocal house concoction with his own self created foundation as an experimental artist in sound processing, Delay created a unique collection of tracks drenched with soul and extra deep grooves in conjunction with diva style female vocals that seduced and complimented the finesse of the shifting drum sequences.

	Album Review: Luomo / Raz Ohara - Running Away
		The overall sound might be a cross section of his overall sound from Vocalcity, slightly more minimal then The Present Lover, but still with hints of this album too with Ohara in perfect form eating up the verse-chorus verse-chorus play the song moves.
		Its odd cause you actually forget that this groove had its own obvious identity as Ohara pulls me in deep with his emotional delivery and Luomo's impressive skill at constructing pop song changes that seem far away from his original ten minute house scapes and experimental creations he does under the Delay name.
		All said and done both tracks succeed in staying true to the obvious inspiration they rub off and within the first track we have one of the best written pop tracks of the year.

		I first heard the title recording of Luomo's The Present Lover on the Digital Disco compilation in 2002, where in some ways it typified the music around it: synth-pop big on novelty effects.
		Heard here at album length, his music is theatrical, but also strangely calm and intimate, especially for a record designed for clubs.
		In Luomo's records, vocals and music are all one piece, there to be manipulated.
