SIBELIUS Luonnotar and Songs Isokoski ODE 1080-5 [AOz][RB]: Classical CD Reviews- July 2006 MusicWeb-International   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Luonnotar was the primeval goddess, who floated alone in the universe before the world was created "in a solitude of ether".
Luonnotar may be the attraction on this recording, but the rest of it is important too.
Luonnotar is superbly done and what an otherworldly piece this is - minimalistic, understated, dramatic, terse in the manner of the Fourth Symphony and The Bard, as mysterious and gnomic as Martinu's Epic of Gilgamesh (another creation epic) yet with an operatic mastery.

 Finnish Mythology
She came upon the goddess floating in the ocean, and perceived her knee to be a small island.
On the end of the third day, Luonnotar felt a horrible burning pain on her knee, and jerked it up violently, tossing the 3 eggs and the duck back into the sea.
The upper part of the eggs became the sky, the speckled parts becoming the starry heavens, the dark patches becoming the clouds in the sky and the yolks joining to become the sun.

 Luonnotar (Daughter of Nature)
In the opinion of many Sibelians Luonnotar is one of the composer's very best works, an entirely original masterpiece in the same way as the late symphonies and Tapiola.
Then during the years 1905-1906 he was composing an orchestral work which he called "Luonnotar", but which at the last moment was given the name Pohjolan tytär (Pohjola's Daughter).
The musical embryo of Luonnotar can be found in an eight-bar sketch which Sibelius gave as a keepsake to Eliel Aspelin-Haapkylä in the Bar Riche, Berlin, in May 1909.

Jani Salonen | Mytologia, Luonnotar   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
At the beginning there was only Luonnotar 'all alone in a vast emptiness'.
Later she floated for centuries on the cosmic ocean, until one day a bird made a nest on her knees and began to hatch some eggs.
Afterwards Luonnotar fashioned the continents and the seas, and gave birth to Väinämöinen, the Finnish hero.

Yet “Luonnotar” is, ironically, relatively unknown outside of Finland not only due to its language (set here with unusual grace), but to the obscurity of the tale it tells.
The character of Luonnotar had fascinated Sibelius as far back as 1893, when he had planned to make her the heroine of his projected opera Veneen luominen.
Aptly enough, Sibelius’ first Luonnotar venture boasted a strong feminine hand: in 1905, the composer and his wife Aino began what he called their “joint enterprise”, a projected symphony or symphonic poem to be entitled “Luonnotar”.

Luonnotar (The Sprit of Nature), tone poem for voice & orchestra, Op.
Luonnotar is given a gripping performance, at a tempo moderately quicker than the elder Jarvi's recent DG version -- I found Paavo's approach more succesful, with a more blended vocal line.
The highlight of the disc for me was Night Ride and Sunrise, given a emotionally powerful and communicative performance that leaves one wondering why it is not better known.

This is not the Luonnotar we know from 1913, which is why it is customary to write about the earlier project using quotes.
The libretto of the oratorio and the letter in which Jalmari Finne clarified the structure of the oratorio were found in the 1990s as a result of research by Markku Hartikainen.
Be that as it may, in Sibelius's creative imagination "Luonnotar" was now taking the shape of a pure orchestral work rather than an oratorio.

Both Luonnotar and The Bard are among Sibelius’s most gnomic and beautiful creations.
Luonnotar is one of the four Doráti-conducted tone poems and in 1969 was an extraordinarily rare item.

Given that Sibelius' mother tongue was Swedish, it is perhaps not surprising that many of his songs are in that language.
Luonnotar, however, being from the great national epic, the Kalevala, is in Finnish.
This song deals with the creation of the heavens: Luonnotar, a noble maiden, is fertilized by the waves of the sea.

Opening with one of the arranged songs "Kaiutar" [The Echo-Nymph], the textures are beautiful and Soile Isokoski, the Helsinki Philharmonic and Leif Segerstam acquit themselves marvellously although it has to be said that this is probably not quite what Sibelius would have chosen himself.
It is quite upstaged by the gem of the disc, Luonnotar [The Nature-Spirit], in which the magical Sibelian landscape is powerfully evoked by all concerned.
