In 1742 his father removed to now Lurgan township, Franklin county, where his boyhood days were spent upon the paternal farm.
In Bouquet's expedition of 1763, he was in the fight of Bushy Run; while in the subsequent campaign of that gallant officer, he was stationed, with the great portion of the Second Pennsylvania, on the line of the stockade forts on the route to Fort Pitt as lieutenant commanding the company.
He was a presidential elector in 1796, and, from 1801 to 1803, one of the associate judges of the county of Dauphin.

William McCord, probably the son of the Immigrant William McCord, was in Hamilton Township of Cumberland (now Franklin) County by 1743.  He is probably not the William McCord, a laborer, age 30, born in Ireland who enlisted July 24, 1746 and was under the command of Samuel Perry on the 4th of August 1746.
On a petition to the governor from Cumberland County dated 15 July 1754 (original in Pennsylvania Historical Society library in Philadelphia) William McCord and John Irvin are among the signers.
The Pollock draught is bounded as follows:  on the west by the Mountain, on the south by William McCord and Joseph Eaton, on the east by John Lowry, and on the north by a Dutchman.  This Pollock draught embraced the present J. Walker Martin, Wiland Bricker, Jacob Brechbiel and Clarence Burkholder farms.

He differed from a majority of his constituents in supporting the Pennsylvania Republican or Anti-Constitutional Party, in sympathizing with Philadelphia and its interests, and in taking a Federalist stance when Pennsylvania debated the new United States Constitution.
First elected to the Assembly from Northumberland County in 1781, he was reelected in 1782, seated by the Assembly in 1783 after it resolved a disputed election, probably defeated in 1784, and refused to accept a seat in 1785 after another disputed election.

 James Hemphill Maclay: His Civil War Letters
James' great-great-grandfather, Charles Maclay, was born in Ireland in 1703 and had emigrated with his wife, Eleanor Query, and their infant son, John, to Pennsylvania in 1734.
It was part of the Army of the Potomac that saw action in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania and whose main goals were to defend Washington and capture Richmond.
James' original enlistment was for three years and when it expired in early 1864 he still believed so strongly in preserving the Union that he reenlisted for the duration of the war, attaining the rank of sergeant.

The four McCords who served under Captain Strain belonged to Lurgan Township, while some of the land entries mentioned by Virginia Shannon Fendrick in American Revolutionary Soldiers from Franklin County definitely do not belong to the Fort McCord area.  (In the Jakes File #924 in the appendix a Pvt Wm.
McCord is listed under Capt. William Strain from 1780-82 with the note that he settled in Franklin County prior to 1745 and built the Fort; his wife was Sarah.  This is probably the William, son of David the Weaver, who married Sarah Kerr and is not the son of William of the Fort.)
From the Fryberg Collection, Pennsylvania Historical Society Library in Philadelphia comes an anonymous history of the McCord Family that has useful references but jumbles up the William McCords rather badly by my interpretation.
