Luritja - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Luritja is a name used to refer to several dialects of the Indigenous Australian Western Desert Language, and thereby also to the people who speak these varieties, and their traditional lands.
The area surrounding Papunya, including Mount Liebig is often referred to as Papunya Luritja, both in land and language, while areas to the south-east around Finke and Maryvale are often referred to as Titjikala Luritja (Titjikala is the Luritja name for Maryvale).
Like Luritja generally, Papunya Luritja is a dialect of the Western Desert Language and is closely related to the Pintupi language of the Kintore area.

Politico-Historical construction of the Pintupi Luritja and the Concept of Tribe, The Oceania - Find Articles
This paper explores the history of the emergence of Pintupi Luritja as the dominant language in the Central Australian community of Amunturrngu (Mt Liebig), traced from the people's first encounters with settlement in the 1940s at Haasts Bluff, through to the present.
It is a political history, as movement toward settlement demanded a re-structuring of social relations within a newly settled polity.
To elaborate on this polity I examine the concept of a language community through the construction of Pintupi Luritja as a 'communilect'.

Approximately sixty years ago Pintubi and Luritja people began to move east from their traditional lands in significant numbers in response to the establishment of missions and ration depots, first at Hermannsburg and later at Haast's Bluff.
It is likely that this term comes from the Arrarnta word used to refer to all the people who traditionally lived to the immediate west of their country.

It was a long-awaited victory for the Luritja group, who first incorporated the Luritja land Association in 1974, the first Aboriginal land rights organisation established in Central Australia.
Apparently failing to give any weight to the immense significance of the land for the traditional owners, the DAA rejected the offer on the grounds that parts of the lease were considered non-viable for a cattle enterprise and were being considered for use as a national park.
On many occasions the traditional landowners also attempted direct action to return to their country, but were thwarted by sometimes severe harassment from station management, illness, water, transport and supply problems.

The term does not identify a specific dialect; for instance, Papunya Luritja is not the same dialect as Alice Springs Luritja.
According to Ian Green (p.c.), "Papunya Luritja has developed from Eastern Pintupi, shows influence from Warlpiri and Arrernte, and shares some grammatical/morphological features with the southern Western Desert dialects Yankunytjatjarra and Pitjanytjatjarra rather than Pintupi.
Eastern Pintupi was spoken in the Kintore-Ilypili region, and the Pintupi described by Hansen and Hansen was spoken in the area west of Kintore (see Hansen and Hansen 1977:21)".
