The predominant colors in the Lusitano breed are gray, bay and chestnut.
The head is well proportioned, of medium length, narrow and dry with a pronounced jaw ans slightly convex profile; the eyes are large and lively, almond-shaped or Oriental in appearance, and the ears are small and curved inward at the tip.
Archaeological evidence in the Iberian Peninsula, modern day Spain and Portugal, indicates that the origins of the Lusitano horse date back to at least 25,000 BC in the form of its primitive ancestor, the Sorraia breed.
