Topic: Lusk Abbey

 [No title]
Lusk has a long and varied history which would simply not be possible to produce in such a small amount of space.
Lusk Abbey dominates the skyline on the approach to the village.
The pyramid-shaped monument standing in front of the church was erected in the mid 1800's to commemorate the Rev. Peter James Tyrell, Parish Priest of Lusk from 1841 to 1843.

LUSK, a parish, partly in the barony of NETHERCROSS, but chiefly in that of BALROTHERY, county of DUBLIN, and province of LEINSTER, 4 miles (N.) from Swords, on the road from Dublin City to Skerries ; containing, with the town of Rush, 5849 inhabitants, of which number, 924 are in the village of Lusk.
The village is pleasantly situated on the road from Dublin, and the surrounding scenery is agreeably diversified.
The church, built on the site and partly with the materials of the ancient abbey, is in the later English style of architecture, with a massive square embattled tower having at three of the angles a slender circular tower and at the fourth a similar tower of larger dimensions, which is rootless and without battlements.

In 1135 the town, the Abbey, and the whole country of Fingal, were burned by Donel Mac Murrough O'Melaghlin in revenge for the murder of his brother, Connor Prince of Meath; but O'Melaghlin expiated his crime at the hands of the enraged people of the town.
Balrothery, Bremore, and Baldungan were severed from Lusk, and appropriated to the, monastery of Kilbixy (Tristernagh), Co. Westmeath; and in 1224 Archbishop Henry transferred the Canons Regular on St. Patrick's Island to the mainland at Skerries.
But in Lusk, as in most other places, "all the parishioners were -rEcusants." This explains how the Chauncel in Lusk was well looked after by the Prebendaries of St. Patrick's who were the incumbents, and the nave was neglected by the parishioners who were not allowed to use it for Catholic service.

THE legend of the building of St. Alban's Abbey is particularly interesting as it is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, references to the Masonic Craft (Operative) in English literature, which is founded on evidence still to be seen after a lapse of many centuries.
A generation later, another learned monk of the same abbey, known as Matthew of Paris, compiled his Chronicles of English History, bringing the tale down to 1273 A.D., and incorporating the writings of his predecessor, so that at first later scholars were of the impression that he was responsible for the whole.
Lusk was asked to exemplify the work of the Third Degree that night; presumably this was done, for Grand Lodge at the same session voted to adopt his report and to use the Ritual as recommended by him as the Standard Work for Illinois.

Paul was a zealous Jew whose explosive meeting with Jesus led him to believe that Israel’s God had declared Jesus to be the Messiah, and hence the true Lord of the whole world.

He will explain that Paul’s commission to be the “apostle to the Gentiles” led him to hammer out a theology that was essentially a Jewish message for the pagan world, reshaped around Jesus, energized by the Spirit, and taking shape as a deeply personal and political message.
