Lust for Life (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lust for Life is a 1977 album by Iggy Pop, his second collaboration with David Bowie following The Idiot, released earlier in the year.
The album is generally considered to be more of an Iggy Pop record than the Bowie-dominated The Idiot, being less experimental musically and having more of a rock and roll flavour.
"Lust For Life" has been played by many artists including Yo La Tengo, The Damned, Tom Jones and The Pretenders, and David Bowie live, and is used as bumper music on The Jim Rome Show.

Pink Floyd - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The album was a hit in the UK where it peaked at #6, but did not get much attention in North America, reaching #131 in the U.S. During this period, the band toured with Jimi Hendrix, which helped to increase its popularity.
The next record, the double album Ummagumma, was a mix of live recordings and unchecked studio experimentation by the band members, with each member recording half a side of a vinyl record as a solo project (Mason's first wife makes an uncredited contribution as a flautist).
The album's complicated and precise sound engineering by Alan Parsons set new standards for sound fidelity; this trait became a recognizable aspect of the band's sound and played a part in the lasting chart success of the album, as audiophiles constantly replaced their worn-out copies.

On September 9th 1977 "Lust for Life" was unleashed, this album runs at just under 42 minutes and has just 9 songs, with it's opening track that barks into life, with it's musical themes stolen by Bowie from the music that introduced the American services overseas radio network in Germany.
This is another album that has been re-released by Virgin America in 1990 and again it's not re-mastered, all the delicate touches that could be heard on vinyl are just drowned in a sea of background hiss, please fix this classic album for the new century ASAP...
i've heard theories that these two albums are supposed to musically and lyrically reflect iggy's state of mind at the time; 'the idiot' was the depressing descent into pills-and-booze despair; 'lust for life' was the optimistic, pick-yourself-up recovery.

But on "Lust for Life", released less than a year later, Iggy decided it was time to kick up his heels, as he traded in the mid-tempo introspection of his first album and began rocking hard again.
Musically, "Lust for Life" is a more aggressive set than "The Idiot", largely thanks to drummer Hunt Sales and his bassist brother Tony Sales.
On "Lust for Life", Iggy Pop managed to channel the aggressive power of his work with the Stooges with the intelligence and perception of "The Idiot", and the result was the best of both worlds; smart, funny, edgy, and hard-rocking, "Lust for Life" is the best album of Iggy Pop's solo career.

As an owner of both Iggy Pop's 1977 'Lust For Life' album and Jet's 'Get Born' (i recently removed it from my collection), i have listened to both individual songs a ridiculous amount of times and there is no doubting the similarities - in guitar and bass alone.
Jet have achieved monumental success (whether they deserve it ahead of a lot of other Aussie bands is another debate, but they'll disappear soon so it doesn't matter) from a handful of catchy pop-rock songs, it's not my cup of tea but i can understand how people have got caught up in them.
"Lust" is boring by comparison, with the same tempo throughout, uninspiring lyrics, and a dull chorus.

Drummer Hunt Sales' relentless pounding on "Lust For Life" holds a candle to the drumming machine known as John Bonham.
Iggy's brash and irreverent vocals are inescapably punk, whether he's cutting his teeth on the RandB styled "Tonight" or thrashing things out with the menacing "Neighborhood Threat." On "Some Weird Sin," he and Bowie harmonize to great affect on this autobiographical rant on boredom-inspired moral decadence.
A tough kid from the middle class streets of Ann Arbor, Iggy struggled with the vagaries of stardom, a fact that he addresses with "Success." Whatever price he may have paid for living the life-on-the-edge that he sang about, he still proved with ferociously good records like this, that nothing succeeds like excess.

Lust For Life by Iggy Pop CD
Two songs will need little introduction - 'Lust For Life' and 'The Passenger' are as intrinsic to the tapestry of 70s rock music as sundry Beatles efforts were to the previous decade (their influence on 90s film soundtracks is a testament to their durability).
Those monolithic jukebox favourites aside, listeners may also find space in their hearts for the swaggering 'Neighbourhood Threat' (shades of the Stooges, without the musical clatter) and the disquieting 'Turn Blue', written from the viewpoint of an overdosing junkie.
"Lust For Life" and "The Passenger" are rock classics still played and loved 25 years later.

If The Idiot exploits the (tranceprone) affinity for the slow rocker that Bowie evinced on Station to Station, this reestablishes the (apollonian) affinity for the dionysiac artist Bowie made so much of five years ago on Mott's All the Young Dudes.
Like most rock and rollers, I prefer this to The Idiot because it's faster and more assertive--which means, among other things, that the nihilistic satire is counteracted by the forward motion of the music itself.
