Introduction to The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod
The Missouri Synod has taken part in all of the Lutheran bilateral dialogues held in the United States to this date, beginning with the Lutheran/Roman Catholic Dialogue in 1965, and including official discussions with the Orthodox, with Reformed Churches, the Anglicans, Methodists, Baptists, and conservative Evangelicals.
Missouri Synod Lutherans therefore seek a balance in public worship between the proclamation of the Gospel in the Word and in sacrament.
While the Synod holds that the ordination of women to the office of pastor is contrary to the Scriptures, approximately 45 percent of its full-time professional church workers are women.

The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod - Belief & Practice
The word "Synod" in The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod comes from Greek words that mean "walking together." The term has rich meaning in our church body, because congregations voluntarily choose to belong to the Synod.
Being "Lutheran," our congregations accept and teach Bible-based teachings of Martin Luther that inspired the reformation of the Christian Church in the 16th century.
Contained in The Book of Concord: The Confessions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, these statements of belief were put into writing by church leaders during the 16th century.

 Missouri Synod?
On April 26, 1847 representatives of sixteen German Lutheran congregations from Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan met in Chicago, Illinois to organize the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, which was later shortened to the Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod.
The word "syn" is a preposition and means "with" or "together with." The word "hodos" means "journey" or "way (of life)." So the word "synod" means "having a way of life together" or "journeying together" or "walking together." As members of the Missouri Synod, we agree to walk together with other members of the Synod.
From a modest beginning in the state of Missouri, the Synod is now international in scope and includes members with ancestors from every continent and race.
