Until the demolition in 1829 this was the most important building in Lutjegast.
B.J. Prott became known especially because of this struggle against the Bishop of Munster during the period of the relief of Groningen ("Groningen's ontzet in 1672) and his defence of the fortress of Bourtange.
In 1992 this plague was presented by the Government of New Zealand to the population of Lutjegast as a memorial to the fact that 350 years ago the coast of new Zealand was charted by the Tasman expedition.
Abel Janszoon Tasman, in an extant entry of his proposed second marriage under date 27 December 1631 in a church register of Amsterdam, is described as a seaman, aged 28, of Lutjegast.
It appears, therefore, that he was born in 1603.
Lutjegast was a village in the Netherlands near the city of Groningen.
The greatest of Dutch navigators, the discoverer of Tasmania, New Zealand, the Tonga and the Fiji Islands, and the first circumnavigator of Australia, was born at Lutjegast in Groningen, about 1603.
In 1634 we first meet with him in the East Indies, sailing from Batavia (February 18) to Amboyna.
