Topic: Lutz jump

Lutz jump - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The lutz is a jump in figure skating, named after Alois Lutz (1898-1918), an Austrian skater who performed it in 1913.
The lutz is similar to the flip and the two jumps can be hard for the novice viewer to tell apart.
For example, Sonja Henie did clockwise lutz jumps and the remainder of her jumps and spins in a counterclockwise direction.

Figure skating jump - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The waltz jump is a one-half rotation launched from the forward outside edge, similar to an Axel, and is rarely performed in elite competition.
Combinations are defined as two or more jumps in which the take-off edge of the second (or third, or fourth) jump is the same as the landing edge of the first jump.
In a throw jump, the woman is assisted on a standard jump by her partner and lands on a back outside edge as if she were jumping alone.

 Figure Skating Journal Glossary, Jumps
The lutz is a counter rotation jump, meaning the skater glides into the jump in the opposite direction to which he will rotate the jump in the air.
The half lutz is performed identically to the basic lutz jump; however, it lands forward on the left toe pick then the skater pushes onto a RFI edge.
This is a critical jump in the development of a figure skater because the movements involved in the take-off of this jump are similar to those required for the toe loop and salchow.

Figure skating: what is a lutz?
Figure skating jumps are not difficult to understand.
The Lutz, named after an obscure Italian skater Tomas Lutz, can be as difficult to identify as it is to perform, but like all other figure skating jumps, the Lutz has three parts: take-off, rotation and landing.
The Lutz rotates an even number of times: once for a single, twice for a double, three times for a triple and four times for a quadruple or "quad." The quad Lutz has not been performed in competition as of the beginning of the 2000/2001 skating season.

The jump is done by leaping off the LBI edge and at the same time, placing the right toe-pick on the ice.
In the first five jumps discussed earlier(except the toe walley), the rotation of the jumps are done in the same direction as the skating direction.
In the case of a lutz, the rotation of the jump is the reverse of the skating direction.

BBC - h2g2 - Jumps in Figure Skating
The toe loop jump is a toe assisted jump, in which the skater enters from a backwards outside edge, uses the toe pick of the free foot to help push the skater into the air, turns towards the toe pick and into the edge, and lands on the same edge as the entrance.
The lutz jump takes off from a backward outside edge, uses the toe pick of the free foot to jump into a rotation against the edge, and lands on the backward outside edge of the same foot used for the toe pick.
The only jump from a forward edge that's commonly seen in competitive figure skating is the axel; a counterclockwise jumper would enter the axel from a left forward outside edge, and land on a right backward outside edge.

The Layperson's Guide to Lutzes & Loops
A jump “cheat”:  a cheated jump is when the skater completes the intended revolutions, but part of that revolution is done while the skate is on the ice, not while the skater is in the air.
That is, the skater prepares to Lutz on the outside edge, but in that split-second before take-off, the edge regains its upward stance, leaning inside, and thus what is really accomplished is a flip jump instead.
However, what separates it from the standard loop jump is that it is landed on the "wrong" foot; i.e., whereas a CCW skater lands a loop on their right foot, they would land a half loop on their left foot.

Although there are many different jumps and combinations of jumps done in skating the basic thing that you need to know is that there are three parts to every jump: a take off, a rotation in the air, and a landing.
The different jumps in figure skating are as follows: waltz jump, toe-loop, salchow, loop jump, flip jump, lutz jump, and axel.
The lutz jump is similar to the flip jump in that it is a toe jump which takes off from the left foot.

The Lutz jump is similar to the toe loop and flip in that you use a toe assist.
The most common preparation for Lutz jumps is a series of back crossovers into the corner of the rink.
This actually turns the jump into a flip because you are on the inside edge, and judges are required to deduct for the mistake.

The most difficult jump in figure skating is named for its inventor, Axel Paulsen, a Norwegian speed skating champion who became famous as an exhibition and trick skater.
This jump is performed without a toe pick assist and is an edge jump in which the skater completes a loop in the air (or two or three), taking off from a backward outside edge and landing on the same back outside edge.
A flashy move in which the skater jumps into the air and performs a split in mid-air with the hand touching the ankles or toe.

Like all jumps, the toe loop is going to suceed or fail depending on whether you can do the setup two or three seconds before the jump correctly.
The lutz is a more difficult jump than the flip because it takes off of an outside edge which is counter to the jump's rotation.

 Lutz Jump
It is one of the most recognizable of jumps, because it is usually entered from a very long straight backwards glide across the full diagonal of the arena.
After the long glide on the left foot, the skater usually leans a little bit to the left (proving to the judges that she is on an outside edge), picks with the right foot and jumps.
Many skaters actually change to the inside edge before takeoff, turning the jump into the much simpler flip (many people call this a "flutz").

Now, the toe pick actually assists the jump: The lutz' difficulty is the lean of that back outside edge.

 Code of Points Considered Harmful
Also missing are less common jumps which have been performed on occasion in the past: a toeless lutz, double walley or double one-foot salchow, for example.
This method of assigning a base value to a jump combination also does not take into consideration the fact that the order of the jumps in the combination affects the difficulty of the combination as a whole -- for example, a double toe/triple toe combination is much more difficult than a triple toe/double toe.
The restrictions on jump combinations will limit skaters' creativity with multi-jump combinations and sequences, and indeed, with the devaluation of jumps in sequence, it is unlikely that any skater would deliberately plan to include a jump sequence in their program.

I had my writing notebook, skating element descriptions and computer printed media guide of skaters and was juggling those along with my camera in my hands.
Hence, you'll see descriptions such as "double jump" because I couldn't identify the type (salchow, toe-loop, loop, flip and so on) or if I'm really having a time "jump combination" because I couldn't allocate the type or the number of revolutions of each jump.
But, I find that different skaters have different looks and approaches to the jump takeoffs, so that throws another wrench in things.
