The young lamp (Luxo Jr.) examines a rubber ball in this still from the short.
It is the source of the small desk lamp (officially named "Luxo Jr.", according to the official site) included in Pixar's corporate logo.
On the technical level, it demonstrates the use of shadow maps to simulate the shifting light and shadow given by the animated lamps, simple surface textures, coordinated articulation of "limbs", and power cords that trail believably behind the moving lamps.

In Luxo Jr., it was very important that the audience was looking in the right place at the right time, because the story, acting and emotion was being put across with movement alone, in pantomime and sometimes the movement was very subtle.
Jr.'s hop (figure 1) was animated by first setting the keyframes for his forward movement only: two keyframes were set for the X translation, the first where the hop starts and the second where he lands.
Jr.'s base was very heavy and when he hopped, we wanted the base to start stationary, then pop up in the air from the momentum of his jump, arc over, then land with a thud, suddenly stationary again.

Last semester we were assigned a basic animation assignment, to animate a luxo lamp and ball, ala Luxo jr.
He did a Luxo homage on his demo that got him hired at Pixar, it was a Luxo Sr.
I remember in acting, when people did a scene that was from a movie, you couldn't help but compare it to the original, and no matter how good it was, something wasn't right because you would be analyzing and comparing to the original scene.

Years ago, Pixar introduced us to Luxo, Jr., (the first CGI short film to garner an Oscar nomination) a cute hopping desklamp who, along with his wise and benevolent father lamp, discovers that you can sometimes have TOO much fun.
Ideally, we want to be able to drag the lamp around and have it automatically generate impulse waves down the length of the cord, as well as follow the lamp without having to resort to any great amount of manual keyframing.

As Al is leaving the Toy Barn with most of the main characters in his bag, Buzz is swooping down after him.

In 1987, the Irvine, California, 16-year-old was so impressed by the festival’s computer-generated film Luxo, Jr.

Besides two Pixar shorts (“Luxo Jr.” and “Tin Toy”) the only extra this set has is “outtakes” from “Toy Story 2.” These were originally shown in theaters during the film’s credits (added after a few weeks of being in release).
These are essentially little scenes meant to be funny, as if the computer-animated characters were real actors.

 Apple posts new iMac G4 commercials (The iMac)
Apple's two new iMac G4 commercials are provided by their friends over at Pixar, who also apparently helped with the informational video graphics shown during the keynote including the dancing iMac.
Pixar also seems to be poking fun at their own Luxo, Jr.
One 15 second commercial entitled "SuperDrive" shows the cute iMac with tons of character being amazed by its own SuperDrive drawer opening and closing.

It inspired two spoofs, "Sio Benbor" and later "Sio Benbor Jr." The latter film was, of course, targeting John Laseter's Luxo Jr.
Ironically, not long after getting rid of PIXAR ILM will be forced to create a new CG department..
As an attempt to generate interest in their capabilities, Laseter lead the Pixar team in creating the short CG film, "Luxo Jr." Luxo will be the first CG film to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Film.
