Willem Jacob Luyten (Mar 7 1899, Semarang – Nov 21 1994, Minneapolis) was a Dutch-American astronomer.
Luyten was born in the Dutch Indies to Jacob and Cornelia M. Luyten (nee Francken), where his father was a teacher of French.
He also discovered some of the Sun's nearest neighbors, including Luyten's star as well as the high–proper motion star system Luyten 726-8, which was soon found to contain the remarkable flare star UV Ceti.

  Encyclopedia: Luyten's star
Luyten's Star (GJ 273 Recons) is a red dwarf at a distance of around 12.36 light-years.
It is approximately a quarter the mass of the Sun, a tenth of its diameter and a tiny fraction of its luminosity (0.0004 solar luminosities).
The proper motion of a star is the motion of the position of the star in the sky (the change in direction in which we see it, as opposed to the radial velocity) after eliminating the improper motions of the stars, which affect their measured coordinates but are not real...

Willem Jacob Luyten, March 7, 1899—November 21, 1994 | By Arthur Upgren | Biographical Memoirs
Luyten's thesis was based on 13,500 visual observations of variable stars, some of which he made in high school and others with the 6-inch refractor at the Leiden Observatory.
Luyten collaborated with E. Carpenter of the University of Arizona, E. Gaviola of the Cordoba Observatory, and G. Haro of the Tonantzintla Observatory to obtain colors of the faint proper motion stars found in the survey.
Luyten's function was vitiated only among the very faintest of stars; unfortunately, these are the ones most critical to the study of certain aspects of stellar evolution and of other planetary systems.

Castor is a star (Alpha Geminorum) of magnitude 1.6, the fainter star of the zodiacal constellation Gemini, or the Twins.
In 1719 it was discovered to be a visual binary star, with components of magnitudes 2.8 and 2.0 separated by 6 seconds of arc and revolving around each other in about 350 years.
This star is also a spectroscopic binary, the two components of which revolve around each other in about one day.

Willem Luyten was born to Dutch parents in the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia, and moved to the Netherlands in 1912.
He determined the density of stars in space as a function of luminosity and discovered the great majority of the white dwarfs known in his time.

 Luyten's Star
The high proper motion of this dim star was probably discovered by Willem Jacob Luyten (1899-1994), who found the proper motions of over 520,000 stars despite the loss of sight in one eye since 1925 by building an automated photographic plate scanner and measuring machine.
Luyten's Star is is a main sequence red dwarf star of spectral and luminosity type M3.5 Vn.
Assuming an upper limit for mass of Luyten's Star at two tenths of a Solar mass and the semi-major axis of orbit around the star, three upper limit possibilities were derived: 1.1 Jupiter-mass with an orbital period of 10 years; 0.7 Jupiter-mass with a 20-year period; or a 0.4 Jupiter-mass with a 40-year period orbit.

 * Flare Star - (Astronomy): Definition
A faint red star that appears to change in brightness due to explosions on its surface.
Being so faint, flare stars must be very close to the solar system to be noticed; indeed many of them are within fifteen light years from us.
Flares: Flare Stars are stars which show eruptions like solar flares, but which may cause the light of the star to increase by a factor of several and cover a large fraction of the stellar surface.

Most stars close to Earth are small and dim and can't be seen by the naked eye, so they weren't catalogued by earlier astronomers with less powerful telescopes.
Any star designated with a Greek letter, like α (Alpha) Centauri, was probably catalogued by the astronomer Bayer; usually he started with the brightest star in a constellation and worked downwards.
Stars like 82 Eridani were first catalogued by Flamsteed, who catalogued more stars than Bayer.

The action alternates between the strategy of the War Room (where the emotionless Shepard comes to depend on the assistance of WREN 2nd Officer Anne Davis), the bridge of the Bismarck where Admiral Luytens and Captain Lindemann decide on the German moves, and the actions of the commanders of the various British ships giving chase.
The Shepard character is a bit of a war stereotype—emotionless and by the book, but of course there's a reason, which seasoned war-film watchers will soon guess.
The part is well-played by Kenneth More, a familiar British star most active during the 1950s and 1960s.

Sometimes, as in the case of Elisabeth Luytens and her Echo of the Wind, the response has been aggressive, testing player and instrument (a rich-toned Amati on loan from the Royal Academy of Music) to their limit.
Other examples, such as Robert Saxton's tribute to the Hassidic tradition, Invocation, Dance and Meditation, have been fruitful studies in collaboration between player and composer, or, in the case of John Hawkins's Blake-inspired Urizen, keen-eared responses to the instrument's potential for dark utterance through soulfully eloquent melody.
