 LHS
The catalogue gathers stars with large proper motions, the large majority coming out of the Bruce Proper Motion Survey (Luyten 1963).
Luyten W.J., 1976, A Catalogue of 1849 Stars with Proper Motions greater than 0.5" annually.
Numbers larger than 6000 refer to Appendix II of the printed version, containing stars for which at one time or another a value larger than 0.49"/yr was published; these numbers are not listed in the printed version of the catalogue.

9 Nov. '03 Major News about Minor Objects
A search for more about LHS 2421, aka Luyten 2421, doesn't reveal details such as its type or distance, but it was one of thousands discovered in the remarkable career of Willem Jacob Luyten (1899-1994), and was compiled into his Luyten Half-Second Catalogue ( Revised LHS).
He didn't find it in a catalog of nearby stars, but, after some discussion about it on the MPML, he discovered via the VizieR Catalogue Service that his object was the already known LHS 2421.
Last May 20th, A/CC reported about the same NEAT archives used by asteroid/comet hunters put to use also to discover the third closest known star or star system.

 1 Introduction
One reason for the incompleteness of the catalogue of nearby stars is the lower limiting magnitude of the proper motion catalogues in the southern sky.
From the statistics of the Catalogue of Nearby Stars one can infer that at 10 pc about 30% of all stars are so far undetected (Henry et al.
All 58 stars in the Catalogue of Nearby Stars (CNS3) of Gliese and Jahreiß ( 1991) with distances less than 5 pc have proper motions larger than 0.5 arcsec/yr.

Cross-identifications are given to stars in the SAO Catalogue (Smithsonian Institution 1966).
The 118209 stars of the Hipparcos Input Catalogue were selected from some 214000 distinct candidates contained in some 214 observations programs.

 abstract astro-ph/0006008
We discuss the comparison of astrometric catalogues, containing either instantaneous data or mean ones, the question of using acceleration terms, the treatment of `averaged' observational data, and some problems connected with the determination and the behaviour of the correlation functions.
Comparison with the recent ACT Catalogue which is based on an independent reduction of the same observations as used for the TRC is reported.
The combination of ground-based astrometric compilation catalogues, such as the FK5 or the GC, with the results of the ESA Astrometric Satellite HIPPARCOS produces for many thousands of stars proper motions which are significantly more accurate than the proper motions derived from the HIPPARCOS observations alone.

ChView - THE STARS OF THE MILKY WAY
Although dim and reddish M-dwarf stars constitute more than half of the population of our galaxy's stars, none are visible to the naked eye.
For example, Sol is traveling at seven kilometers per second northward out of the plane and may eventually rise 200-250 ly above it after 15 million years, while the Alpha Centauri3 (G2V, K1V, and M5.5Ve flare star) system may eventually travel about 800 ly out with an upward velocity that is three times faster.
While some begin with the cataloguer's last name (e.g., Ross or Wolf), most use just the first letter of the name(s), or some other abbreviation, to save space.

 Star Catalogs
When spectroscopy came up in the second half of the 19th century, spectral classifications and catalogs of stars were compiled, one of the first lists being that of the Italian Father Angelo Secchi (1818-1878), which appeared in 1867 and contained 316 stars.
In this work, Bayer introduced the naming of stars for their constellation and by Greek letters in the approximate order of (apparent) brightness: The brightest star in a constellation should be labelled Alpha, the second brightest Beta, and so on.
Misestimates and other irregularities are the reasons why this is only an approximate scheme.

Comparing the CE catalog with the Luyten and the Luyten half-second catalogs, we find that both suffer from incompleteness, which is particularly serious (<~40% complete) for m_R_>~13, where many of the astrophysically interesting object can be found.
