Star catalogue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The catalogue was compiled by Annie Jump Cannon and her co-workers at Harvard College Observatory under the supervision of Edward Pickering, and was named in honour of Henry Draper, whose widow donated the money required to finance it.
Although this version of the catalogue was termed "preliminary", it is still the current one as of September 2001, and is referred to as CNS3.
The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory catalogue is a photographic atlas of the sky, complete to about ninth magnitude, as a result of which there is considerable overlap with the Henry Draper catalogue.

Willem Jacob Luyten, March 7, 1899—November 21, 1994 By Arthur Upgren Biographical Memoirs
Luyten collaborated with E. Carpenter of the University of Arizona, E. Gaviola of the Cordoba Observatory, and G. Haro of the Tonantzintla Observatory to obtain colors of the faint proper motion stars found in the survey.
Luyten's thesis was based on 13,500 visual observations of variable stars, some of which he made in high school and others with the 6-inch refractor at the Leiden Observatory.
Luyten was one of a number of distinguished students of these scientists who emigrated to the United States and had a memorable career.

 1 Introduction
One reason for the incompleteness of the catalogue of nearby stars is the lower limiting magnitude of the proper motion catalogues in the southern sky.
From the statistics of the Catalogue of Nearby Stars one can infer that at 10 pc about 30% of all stars are so far undetected (Henry et al.
All 58 stars in the Catalogue of Nearby Stars (CNS3) of Gliese and Jahreiß ( 1991) with distances less than 5 pc have proper motions larger than 0.5 arcsec/yr.

NLTT - NLTT Catalog & First Supplement
The First Supplement to the NLTT Catalogue (Luyten and Hughes 1980) is the result of continued plate analysis and measurements during printing of the NLTT.
The NLTT Catalogue (Luyten 1979, 1980) is a collection of stars on more than 800 Palomar Proper Motion Survey plates found to have relative annual proper motions exceeding 0.18 arcsec.
Identifiers without prefixes are DM or Luyten numbers from the Bruce Proper Motion Survey (L numbers) or the Luyten-Palomar Survey (LP numbers), the former in zones -45 to -89 deg and the latter in zones +89 to -44 deg.

The positions held in the system catalogue of the telescope control computers are all at the epoch of the observation.
The remainder of the positions were obtained from catalogues; notes to the table indicate where these other sources were used.
If no object of the same name exists in the user's own catalogue the telescope will automatically set at a position based on the data presented here.

Proper Motion Objects in the 1992--1994 2MASS Prototype Camera Survey: Filling Out the 25-pc Census
Despite Luyten's poorly cataloged positions for some of the stars (several have POSS-I positions which are arcminutes away from the reported 1950-epoch positions), we have recovered 315 of the 329 NLTT objects falling within the Protocam survey area.
Of the 315 recovered NLTT stars, 12 are already included in the Third Preliminary Edition of the Catalogue of Nearby Stars, which lists all stars within 25 pc of the Sun.
These sources span the length of the main sequence, from the bright B dwarf Regulus (\alpha Leonis) down to M dwarfs at the survey limit.

New Luyten Two-Tenths Catalog of Stellar Proper Motions
This catalog replaces the LTT Catalogs (Luyten 1957, 1961, 1962), which contained stars in the Bruce Proper Motion Survey having proper motions exceeding 0.2 arcsec.
Identifiers without prefixes are DM (Durchmusterung) numbers or Luyten numbers from the Bruce-Palomare Survey (LP numbers).
The introduction to the NLTT (Volume I) should be consulted for more information on the NLTT catalog itself, wherein can be found discussion of positional errors, magnitude estimates and designations of stars used in the catalog.
