Luzzasco Luzzaschi was one of two organists at the court of Ferrara during the reign of Duke Alfonso II d'Este.
Luzzaschi was the central male figure of the musica segreta; his Madrigali a uno, doi e tre soprani, published in 1601, is the only surviving musical document that attempts to record the performance practice of the singing ladies.

This edition presents, in four volumes, the complete unaccompanied madrigals of Luzzasco Luzzaschi, director of music at the Ferrarese court at the end of the sixteenth century.
Luzzaschi was among the most important and most admired musicians of the period, the teach of Girolamo Frescobaldi, the mentor of Carlo Gesualdo, the object of explicit admiration from Claudio Monteverdi, Claudio Merulo, Alfonso Fontanelli, Adriano Banchieri, and many others.
Each setting by Luzzaschi is given a critical commentary by the editor, which often includes discussion of settings of the same texts by Luzzaschi's near contemporaries--settings which, if unpublished in modern edition are included in the present edition.

Luzzasco Luzzaschi (c.1545-1607) was based in Ferrara, and was one of the earlier composers to develop the new monody.
Luzzaschi was perhaps best-known as an organist, although few of his keyboard works survive.
He was one of the early players on the chromatic-enharmonic archicembalo, and that sort of microtonality informs his vocal works as well, leading almost naturally to the style of Gesualdo.

Linn Records: the real sound of music, classical, jazz and folk CDs
In 1992 the group recorded the madrigals for 1, 2 and 3 sopranos by the Ferrarese composer Luzzasco Luzzaschi, and were later awarded Arts Council funding to begin experiments with performing polyphonic madrigals using only female voices and continuo instruments.
None of the pieceswas necessarily composed for the vocal and instrumental forces used here, but since it was common to substitute instruments for voices, the lack of sung tenor and bass parts is insignificant.
The music, by Cipriano de Rore and his pupils Luzzasco Luzzaschi and Giaches de Wert, was originally performed by a once-celebrated ensemble of virtuoso women musicians at the court of Duke Alfonso II d'Este.
