The name of each oblast is a relative adjective, formed by adding a feminine suffix to the name of respective center city: L'viv is the center of the L'vivs'ka oblast' (Lviv Oblast).

Lviv Oblast (Львівська область, L’vivs’ka oblast’ or Львівщина, L’vivshchyna in Ukrainian, Lwów in Polish, Lemberg in German) is an oblast of western Ukraine, created on December 4, 1939.
It was ruled variously by Great Moravia, Kyivan Rus', the independent Ukrainian state of Halych-Volynia (circa 1200–1400, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (circa 1400–1795, the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1795 to 1918 and Poland from 1918-1939, when it was part of the Lwów Voivodship of the Second Republic of Poland.
It was occupied by Nazi Germany from 1941-1944 and remained in Soviet hands after World War II as was arranged during the conferences Teheran and Yalta.

Mykola Horyn, a brother of dissident and Ukrainian Republican Party leader Mykhailo Horyn, was first elected as chairman of the Lviv Oblast Council in 1991, and re-elected in June 1994.
Horyn also served as head of the Lviv Oblast Administration, a post to which he was re-appointed on September 6 by President Leonid Kuchma after all of Ukraine's oblast councils were dissolved upon the adoption of the new Constitution in July.

An inspector with the State Territorial Labor Inspectorate for Lviv Oblast similarly tried to describe discriminatory advertising as primarily a media issue, beyond the purview of the labor inspectors.
The director of the Lviv City Employment Center told Human Rights Watch that although 73 percent of the unemployed in the city of Lviv are women only about 20 percent of the job announcements posted at the center were open to women.
An employment law investigator in Lviv told Human Rights Watch, “There is no discrimination here,” but subsequently claimed that during inspections she had no authority to address the discrimination that she encountered.
