Operation Mars, or 2nd Rzhev-Sychevka Offensive was a World War II strategic offensive launched in November-December of 1942 by Soviet forces against a German salient in the vicinity of Moscow.
Soviet advances during Operations Uranus, Mars and Saturn Operation Saturn was a Red Army operation on the Eastern Front of World War II that led to battles in the northern Caucasus and Donets Basin regions of the Soviet Union from December 1942 to February 1943.

Soviet Operational Deception: the Red Cloak
Prior to the major offensive the area east of Lvov during the summer of 1944, the sector where the main attack thrust was expected, was mined with 160,000 antipersonnel and 200,000 antitank mines within the zone defense.
In the Lvov sector, despite great difficulties from hard fighting and constrained maneuver, the 3d GTA and 4th Tank Army advanced through the four- to six-kilometer-wide "Koltov Corridor." In the area southwest of Brody, units of the 3d GTA began to encircle a large German grouping of seven to eight divisions.
At the same time that operational deception was being conducted in the 18th Army rear area, an offensive with a limited objective was undertaken on 13 July that coincided with the attack in the Rava Russkaya sector.

Operation Bagration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The neighbouring Lvov-Sandomierz Operation was launched on July 17, 1944, and quickly routed the German forces in Ukraine.
The battle has been described as the triumph of the Soviet theory of "the operational art" - because of the complete co-ordination of all front movements and signals traffic to fool the enemy about the fundamental nature of the offensive attack.
During World War II, Operation Bagration was the general attack by Soviet forces to clear the Nazis from Belarus which resulted in the destruction of the German Army Group Centre, possibly the greatest defeat for the Wehrmacht during the war.

The operation called for a concerted effort to crush the Soviet armies within the Izium Salient, captured during the Soviet early spring offensives in March and April.
Most military historians have implied that the Soviet Army of 1942 was not prepared to conduct major offensive operations against the well trained German Army.
In fact, prior to Operation Uranus, during the Battle of Stalingrad, the Red Army didn't have the necessary amounts of anti-tank ordnance and rocket artillery, while the crews of their own tanks, and even their artillery were just as poorly trained as their compatriots in the infantry.
