Lyx makes no attempt to display the exact appearance of the document, just a version which is readable and looks good on the screen.
The source for the Qt LyX port is available from the main KDE site; it wouldn't compile for me, but you may have better luck (for some reason, I've never been able to compile the KDE stuff).
LyX has a little more of a learning curve, and its dependence on a working TeX installation is often seen as a drawback by those unfamiliar with TeX. Any up-to-date Linux distribution includes configured TeX packages which are easy to install.

LyX files can be exported as pure LaTeX, but they require just a tiny bit of cleaning up and post-editing if you want to submit them to a journal, etc. I used it to write my doctoral thesis, and it worked out very well.
LyX was written for unix, but a very good windows port is availible.
This should probably be "c:\" --- lyx doesn't like directory names with spaces, so don't put it in "My Documents" or "Program Files," etc. It will make a new folder named “lyx” at the location named (for example, if you selected “c:\” it would make a folder named “c:\lyx”).

If this is the first time you run \family typewriter lyx \family default, \family typewriter lyx \family default will try to detect the latex settings and generate a \family typewriter.lyx \family default directory under your home directory.
Lyx actually export the lyx file to latex and call \family typewriter latex, xdvi, postscript \family default etc to do these.
However, because of the complexity of latex, lyx can not load very complicated latex files, especially when they use non-standard document style, lots of macros etc. It is advised that you use lyx from the beginning rather than import a half-done latex file.

I wish it would be included in lyx's source.) On DragonFly operating system, there is a core dump when exiting lyx 1.4.1 (using Qt).
The reason is that LyX adds the bindir to > its PATH, so Tools->Reconfigure will work, but bindir is not in the > PATH when you invoke configure by hand.

I have since discovered (thanks to Lyx Quickstart) that one can (a) make a new environment recognisable by adding it to your.layout file (though it seems that they have to be environments which don't have any arguments) and (b) can change the font style using a pseudocolour character style on the characters.
What I used to do (before LyX) was create this by hand -- I would print out a version of the document, and make note of what page each illustration was on, and then go back and write it into the table of illustrators.
The LyX print dialogue allows you to print to a file (which will be a Postscript file), and select the page-range you want to print.

In our process for collaborations on a large document, we have many authors working independently on chapters; we've had more than one call to provide a GUI interface that can be used to layout a rough edition of an author's work while still being able to integrate into the global structure of the book.
The only existing RPM of LyX 1.1.3 appears in the contrib directory of the Mandrake-soft mirrors; this particular RPM asks for strange libraries which are not part of the Helios distribution.
This means building LyX from sources, and to do this you will need a fairly recent gcc with the libstdc++ libraries and headers; given the development environment, LyX is highly portable and can probably be compiled on any Unix workstation.

LyX looked very promising, but it seemingly could not export to any format in which styles were preserved, so I worried that if my documents were in LyX, I couldn't transition to another tool if so desired.
LyX can do fine tuning, but doing so is difficult enough that you'll probably want to use other software (KWord, Gimp, etc) for brochures, flyers, advertisements, and other content whose look must be artistically managed at the page and element level.
LyX is a splendid tool for creating long documents professionally, as well as producing single source, multi use (paper, slides, html, pdf, etc) documents.
