Anatoly Konstantinovich Lyadov - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stravinsky remarked that Lyadov was as strict with himself as he was with his pupils, writing with great precision and demanding fine attention to details.
Lyadov never finished the opera, but sections of the work found realization in the short tone poems Kikimora and The Enchanted Lake.
Sergei Diaghilev asked the composer for a new ballet score for his Ballets Russes for their 1910 season, but Lyadov's penchant for procrastination resulted in his never fulfilling the commission.

Lyadov was born in St. Petersburg into a family of eminent Russian musicians.
Lyadov possessed a technical facility which was highly regarded by his contemporaries, but his unreliability stood in the way of his advancement.
In 1905 Lyadov began work on a new ballet score, but when the work failed to progress, he shifted gears to work on an opera instead.

Lyadov (right) is well-known for his laziness: when he was commissioned by the Ballet russes to write music for the ballet The Firebird, he asked for a whole year to do it.
During his studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatory Lyadov was often absent from class and he was eventually suspended for a while.
This recital is a good introductory guide to the music of Lyadov and a good disc to add to the growing collection of piano albums featuring music by other relatively unknown Russian composers like Rosvalet, Lympunov and Levitski, all representing virtuostic challenges for the piano.

He was associated with Balakirev and subsequently became a member of Belyayev's circle, helping, in particular, in the establishment of the publishing-house that Belyayev established for Russian composers.
Lyadov was a thoroughly competent musician, conductor and composer, but did not apply himself consistently to work.
In many cases Lyadov’s compositions owe much to traditional Russian folk songs, as he lived in a period when nationalism was joined with technical competence inculcated at the Conservatoires.

Anatoly Lyadov never knew the house were he was born and spent his younger days.
Surprisingly, Lyadov himself never felt any urge to teach yawning broadly each time he was to explain the rules of polyphony or fill his students in on harmony.
Anatoly Lyadov died in August 1914 at the still early age of 59… He was buried in the cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Monastery in St. Petersburg.

To observe the traditions of Bolshevism—the orthodox Marxist trend in the R. P.—is of course splendid, Comrade Lyadov.
In conclusion we express the confident hope that Comrade Lyadov, who has worked for so many years in the ranks of revolutionary Social-Democracy, will not stay very long with the new faction of god-building otzovists, or, as they are called for short, “the godly otzovists”, but will return to the Bolshevik ranks.

A student and eventual colleague of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov at St. Petersburg Conservatory, Anatoly Lyadov was quickly recognized by his elders as a brilliant new composer whose music bore a distinct nationalist character.
Lyadov was handicapped, however, by an inborn indolence that ruined several of his best opportunities for advancement in his chosen field.
Perhaps ironically, one of the last mistakes he made paved the way for another composer: when, in 1910, Lyadov failed to deliver a ballet score for Diaghilev, the impresario turned to a young composer who had been aching to try his hand at a ballet: Igor Stravinsky.

 BBC - Proms - Review: 19 August Prom 48
The tone of this concert had been set at the outset with a rare outing for Lyadov's From the Apocalypse and the darker side of Sibelius's soul was explored in an unusually inward account of the composer's Violin Concerto from Siberian violinist Vadim Repin.
Vadim Repin was the soloist in Sibelius's Violin Concerto, whose towering lyricism was accompanied by Gergiev's extremes of speed and phrasing.
But the Shostakovich 13 is one of my all-time favourite works, so I'd been looking forward to this one for some time; and I was not disappointed.

Liadov: A Piano Anthology ~ Anatol Konstantinovich Lyadov
Lyadov's music doesn't usually stand out as having a unique "flavor" setting it apart from the work of other late romantic composers, though some of his music is intended to represent stories from Russian folklore.
My reason for seeking this recording was to obtain a piano recording of a piece I was actually transcribing for performance on the carillon (Berceuse), and this piece is rarely recorded.

The evening opens with less familiar fare: the first two movements from the three-movement "Fairy Tales for Orchestra," by Anatol Konstantinovich Lyadov (1855-1914).
The symphony's program states that this piece is a fitting conclusion to a season that began with Stravinsky's "The Firebird" because Lyadov was the composer that Serge Diaghilev initially had hired to compose the score.
Lyadov did not come through, so Stravinsky was brought in.

Lyadov's musical output is much more modest in quantity and a form scale comparing to Russian prominent composers of the same period, like Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov etc. Unfortunately, his works are also not really well-known and thus almost never played in recitals abroad Russia and are seldomly recorded.

Anatoly Lyadov belonged to the "Western" school of 19th century Russian composers and was associated with the Russian Moguchaya Kuchka (The Five), with Romantic character pieces, dances and contrapuntal forms predominating in his piano music.
Common to these works is the clarity of polished classical forms (expressed in a light rather than severe manner) and the natural joy of making music, which can easily carry the performer into its realm as well.
