The Sindh Industrial Trading Estate was established in 1947 and has grown into the largest industrial area in Pakistan with more than 2,000 industrial units on 4,500 acres of land west of the Lyari River.

I am aware that the Lyari Expressway was originally proposed to alleviate several problems including the erosion of the Lyari riverbeds and traffic congestion in the area.
In a letter to the UN commission on housing rights written by the previous city district government, the local administration assured the UN agency that they would not proceed with the demolition of houses unless a 15 day notice and appropriate compensation was given to the victims.
Owing to the devastation that the expressway has already caused, I write to you now pleading with you to take action to ensure that the demolitions along the Lyari River be immediately stopped until rehabilitation plans and programmes are finalised for the affected communities, as per the Sindh High Court decision of June 2003.

Both projects (the Lyari Expressway and the Northern Bypass) start at the same place and end at the same point, while serving the same purpose of facilitating port related traffic to the north of the country.
The task of the construction of the Rs 5 billion Lyari Expressway has been assigned to the National Highway Authority and its inauguration is likely to be held on March 23.

One project causing particular concern at the moment is the Lyari Expressway, a 16.5 km three-lane road along both banks of the Lyari River designed to divert Karachi’s port-related traffic to up-country destinations without passing through the city.
The project started in 2002 and is expected to result in the removal of as many as 25,000 housing units from both sides of the river, half of which haven been torn down already.
