African Wild Dogs (Lycaon Pictus) Pack Formation a paper by Roger Burrows on the African Wild Dog Pack Formation
Lycaon is a highly social, medium sized canid endemic to Africa where it lives in packs.
Here Lycaon is highly dependent on Impala, a prey species which, although having the advantage of being highly residential and existing locally at high densities year round, has very special habitat requirements.
It is conceivable that a small mutation some 2-3 MY ago in a canid ancestor of Lycaon in Eurasia caused a genetic 'switch ' which, in the presence of pups, switches 'on' the behavioural imperative to adopt, feed and later to defer to pups at kills, to be left permanently 'on'.

Wild Dogs in the Serengeti a paper by Roger Burrows on the 'Youth First' protocol in the African wild dog (Lycaon ...
The recognition of this protocol highlighting the importance of longevity of the alpha pair in a Lycaon pack, single sex immigrant groups of females, and all male groups of mixed cohorts resident on a home range, in maintaining populations is vital.
It is essential in any Lycaon study that a photographic file of each individual in each study pack is compiled with each side of the individuals shown as they differ in markings often considerably.
The unique Lycaon 'youth first' protocol and its consequences for leadership and pack longevity has therefore considerable practical implications for the future conservation management of this highly endangered species both in the wild and in captivity.

Young Lycaon Male is Top Dog a paper by Roger Burrows on the African Wild Dog breeding hierarchy
In the African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) breeding hierarchy a young male takes over as alpha when one of the alpha pair in their pack dies, or if two cohorts of males emigrate together from their natal pack or when a male pup is adopted by unrelated adult males.
The role of 'handling' mediated stress and the efficacy of vaccinating free living packs post exposure and captive Lycaon prior to release to the wild must be fully investigated (East et al 1997 and 2002, East and Burrows 2001, Hofer and East 1998 van de Bildt 2002).
The identification of a 'Young Male' protocol in Lycaon emphasises the vital importance of detailed long term field based observations on free living populations in obtaining an understanding of the basic behaviour of mammals, endangered or otherwise.

The invaluable data which Schaller produced pre 1970 including his estimated population densities therefore relate to wild dog packs and groups on the open plains in the wet season when the packs are confined to the area around the den.
The Serengeti plains are considered to be 'not good habitat' for Lycaon (Frame and Frame 1981) and it is suggested that even in more favourable habitats (claimed to be woodland) a reserve of 2,300 km2 could only support just 6 packs and a maximum of 30 adults.
A dramatic decline in the reproductive success of Serengeti wild dog (but not in the number of packs) in the late 1960s and the 1970s was coincident with reports of the death of wild dog pups with clinical symptoms suggesting Canine Distemper (CD) (Schaller 1972).
