Lycoming - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lycoming is a major aircraft engine company, known primarily for their smaller general aviation engines.
Lycoming first set up business in 1916 in Williamsport, Pa (in Lycoming County) as a sewing machine manufacturer, and soon branched out into bicycle manufacturing as well.
The hyper engine concept was a psychological target for engine designers in the 1930s; in order to make really long-distance flights routine, an engine of this sort of power-to-weight ratio would be needed to lift the required fuel and still have power left over to lift the cargo.

Textron Businesses: Bell: Lycoming: Lycoming Selected Products
Lycoming has six families of engines: the 235, 320, 360, 540, 580 and 720 cubic inch series.
In addition, the engine is reassembled with all new cylinder assemblies, including barrels, heads, pistons, rings, piston pins and plugs, intake and exhaust valves, springs, guides, seats and gaskets plus automatic replacement of any and all parts not meeting new engine tolerances throughout the engine.
And a Lycoming factory overhauled engine is backed by a factory warranty for a full year from the time it is put back in service, regardless of the number of hours flown before overhaul.

On engines that should have their magnetos timed at 25 degrees the leading magnet should be installed at 45 deg BTDC and thereby 45 degrees to the right of the TDC magnet.
Lycoming external engine dimensions can vary significantly, so you need to verify the proper clearance between the sensor and the magnets installed in the flywheel surface.
If you are removing a magneto that has a pilot bearing on the engine side of the magneto, be sure to remove the entire bearing with the magneto.

Continental or Lycoming aircraft engine is hard to start
If the engine has a tendency to start when you let go of the starter switch or if the engine starts better with a low battery; then the engine is firing too early in the stroke.
Engines that fire all the bottom plugs on the left magneto can be hard to start especially in cold weather due to the possibility of plug fouling.
After an engine is shutdown, the temperature of its various components begins to stabilize; the hotter parts such as cylinders and oil cool, while other parts heat up due to the lack of air flow, heat conduction, and heat radiation from those parts of the engine which are cooling.
