A clubmoss is one of a group of plants in the order Lycopodiales, in the class Lycopsida.

Lycopsida. Who is Lycopsida? What is Lycopsida? Where is Lycopsida? Definition of Lycopsida. Meaning of Lycopsida.
The Lycopsida traditionally included all the clubmosses, including Selaginella and Isoetes.
The clubmosses are thought to be structurally similar to the earliest vascular plants, with small, scale-like leaves, homosporous spore borne in sporangia at the bases of the leaves, branching stems (usually dichotomous), and generally simple form.
The Class Lycopsida contains a single living order: the Lycopodiales.

The lycophytes (class Lycopsida) are an ancient group of vascular plants that dominated the earth's flora during the Carboniferous period.
Based upon the fossil record, the lycophytes are thought to have emerged during the early Devonian about 400 Myr ago prior to the evolution of leaves and roots in vascular plants [1,2].
Based on recent DNA-based phylogenetic analyses, the Lycopsida clade is monophyletic and sister to the fern/seed plant, or euphyllophyte, clade [3].

They belong to the plant divisions Lycopsida (Club mosses) and Spenopsida (Horsetails), respectively, two groups known from the Devonian period, between 345 and 395 million years ago.
The club mosses and horsetails appear in the fossil record earlier than any other vascular plants groups except the ferns, which appeared around the same time as horsetails.
The division Lycopsida contains approximately 1,000 species in five genera.

This group is now generally recognized as a division; in the past, however, it was commonly treated as a class, Lycopsida.
In the history of vascular plants, Devonian evidence is of fundamental importance because there was a remarkable initiation of vascular plants of diverse type.

Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden 79(3) (Summer 1992) contains papers from a symposium on the Lycopsida organized by William A.DiMichele and Judith E. Skog and jointly sponsored by the Paleobotanical Society of America and the American Fern Society.
The symposium was held on 8 August 1989 as part of the American Institute of Biological Sciences meetings held in Toronto, Canada.A morphologicafly distinct linage was present millions of years prior to the appearance of any other
The symposium discussed the unique phylogenetic position and morphological distinctness of the Lycopsida: these are used as vehicles to study convergent structural evolution in vascular plants or limits on structurai solutions to common problems such as interception, propagule dispersal, and nutrient acquisition.
