On the land known as the Rypes, in the neighbourhood, there is a military camp, with artillery and rifle ranges; hence the name given to the explosive "lyddite." The town is governed by a mayor, 4 aldermen and 12 councillors.
In 774 land in Lydd was granted by Offa to the monks of Christ Church, Canterbury, and the archbishop of Canterbury evidently held the lordship of the town from an early date.
Lydd was made a member of the Cinque Port of Romney, and in 1290 was granted the same liberties and free customs as the Cinque Ports on condition of aiding the service of its head-port to the crown with one ship.

 History of Lydd, Kent
The town of Lydd, one of the larger towns on the Marsh, is the most southerly town in Kent.
Lydd reached the height of its prosperity during the 13th century, and later became a "limb" of the Cinque Port of New Romney when it was called upon to help with the provision of men and ships.
In 1940 the chancel of the church was destroyed by a direct hit from a bomb; the attack occurred at 4:07 PM on the 15th of October, which is when the church clock stopped.

Lydd, or Lid, is in the hundred of Langport, in the lathe of Shepway.
The hundred is one of those included in the liberty of Romney Marsh ; but Lydd is a corporate town and a member of the cinque-port of New Romney from which it is distant about three miles.

The town of Lydd, where I (Andy Leaning) live, is at the centre of the ancient Romney Marshes, Kent, a mysterious and enchanting region of Kent, rich in history, story and legend.
Lydd in particular, attracted wealth and this believed to be one of the reasons why it is home to the largest Church in Kent.
While in Lydd High Street, and around a designated conservation area, can be found several significant buildings including the Haunted George hotel, the Guild Hall and old town lock-up and a medieval Court House, originally known as the Common House, to which documentary evidence dating back to 1428 is available.

Following local pressure for a branch line serving Lydd and New Romney and the possibility of a new cross channel port being developed at Dungeness, a number of schemes were proposed.
Although the Dungeness port was never built, the Lydd Railway Company obtained an Act on 8th April 1881 to build a line from the South Eastern Railway at Appledore to Dungeness, with a second act of 19th June 1882 authorising a further branch extending north along the coast to New Romney
Goods services to Lydd continued until 1971 and the line was still in use for the removal of ballast aggregates and waste from Dungeness B nuclear power station.

Lydd is often described as being hard to spot from the air but this really shouldn't put you off.Although it isn't easy to spot until you are within about 6 miles it is still one of the easiest airfields to find.

The town of Lydd is situated in the South corner East of the Marsh, approximately 4 miles from the English Channel, and is the most southerly town in South East England.
Lydd town itself is believed to have been formed by Saxons on a sandy island in the Marsh.
The first of a long series of documentary evidence relating to Lydd starts from 8th Century, with a Saxon charter referring to a grant of land at 'Hlyda' (from where Lydd takes its name) and land ownership documents for surrounding areas on public record.
