Lydford (Lideford) was one of the four Saxon boroughs of Devon, and possessed a mint in the days of ~thelred the Unready.
Lydford prison is described in 1512 as one of the most hainous, contagious and detestable places in the realm, and Lydford Law was a by-word for injustice.
At the time of the Commonwealth the castle was entirely in ruins, but in the 18th century it was restored and again used as a prison and as the meeting-place of the manor and borough courts.

Lydford is a village in Devon situated six miles (13 km) north of Tavistock on the western fringe of Dartmoor in the West Devon district.
Running south west from the village is Lydford Gorge, a 1.5 mile (2.4 km) wooded gorge which has been cut through the slate rock by the River Lyd.
The gorge is noted for its 30 metre (100 feet) waterfall.

The first Norman castle was built at Lydford soon after the conquest of 1066; the remains of its earthworks can be seen on the south side of St Petrock's Church.
A new tower was built in 1195, slightly north of the original castle, possibly for use as a prison.
By the early 18th century the castle had become derelict, but it was repaired, and for the next century served as a jail and courthouse, before being abandoned once more and allowed to fall into ruin.

Ethelred established a mint at Lydford and coins taken by the Danes are in Stokholm Museum.

From the map we could see that it was the river Lyd with a water flow which must have come down from the tourist attraction of Lydford Gorge a few miles upstream.
There was plenty of evidence of the railway which must have run up through the valley many years before; we went under a railway bridge and continued uphill and into a field.
We stopped at the car park for lunch and there was plenty of activity from other walkers since there was a big walking event in progress, with many young walking teams finishing their 14 mile morning walk, they too had also enjoyed excellent walking weather.

The golden years were the early 80 s when the club was Somerset and Avon Whitbread Village Knock out champions 4 times, great days were had entertaining the Top Cornish sides such as Grampound Road and St Buryan and also the Welsh clubs Carew and St Fagin's narrowly losing to them in the national quarterfinal.
During that period Lydford were also privileged to host benefit games for Viv Richards, Ian Botham and Brian Rose with large crowds entertained.
Lydford were promoted to the top division in 1997, for a village team consisting of 10 players who had played together as boys in the village and no overseas players this was a tremendous achievement probably never to be repeated by a true village club.
