If Lyle Lovett left any doubts at all about this man's gifts as a performer and songwriter, Pontiac proved that he had even more tricks up his sleeve than he'd let on first time out, and it's the first of several masterpieces in Lovett's career.
Lyle Lovett's a singer-songwriter with a Texas twang to his voice and music, and dollops of that indescribable quality, "style." His songs either exude real life or explore fanciful pseudo-reality, can rock with lots of roll, make you laugh and make you cry, explore possibilities or revel in memory.
Lovett achieves his remarkable intimacy with a voice that's weathered, comfortable and haunting; Nanci Griffith does the same with a high-pitched voice that's seemingly innocent and guileless.

Lyle Lovett is one of the few artists who emerged out of Nashville’s whirlwind of experimentation in the mid-1980s to have an enduring, significant and boldly original career.
Of the album’s 15 tracks, 13 are from his first three albums: the debut Lyle Lovett (1986), the certified-gold Pontiac (1987), and the certified-gold and Grammy-winning And His Large Band (1989).
Even in his earliest work, Lovett’s lyrical observations are poetically written and peppered with irony, wit, sarcasm, and raw emotion.

LYLE LOVETT (1986) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A couple of years ago, I brought Step Inside This House on a trip to Alaska and was enchanted (by the album -- I grew up in Alaska, so the great land is old hat), and ended up picking through the entire first disc.
Large chunks of the album are in Bb (Cowboy Man), Eb (This Old Porch), F (God Does, If I Were The Man You Wanted), and C (Farther Down The Line), which are all somewhere between slightly easier and much easier when played with a capo on the 3rd fret.
On the album, it is the only piece that sounds dated to me (though I grew up on that particular era of dated stuff, so it sounds pleasantly nostalgic).

Lovett is a genre-bending cowboy, a singer and songwriter who revels in a mix of musical styles and who brings a literate sensibility to his lyrics.
But Lovett and his band play each song with a level of commitment and an intensity that should force even the most skeptical of listeners to just tap their feet and go with the flow.
And that, ultimately, is what Lovett's mission appears to be here, to get past all the baggage that weighs us down, to find that girl in the Volkswagen or that "San Antonio Girl" and take that "long drive / That gives him some peace of mind" as he waits for the Judgment Day.

Lyle Lovett discography -- Joe Sixpack's Guide To Hick Music
In the mid-1980s, Texas singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett took good old-fashioned hard country honkytonk and gave it a swift, youthful kick in the rear, bringing a world-weary, hipster slant to the old drinkin', mopin' and truck drivin' confines of the genre.
Of his contemporaries, Lovett was one of the most caustic and arresting performers, as well as one of the most striking musical innovators.
Although Lovett had hit a peak as a craftsman, as a songwriter he seems to be on autopilot.

Since his role in Robert Altman's The Player, Lyle Lovett has been cosy with Hollywood.
It is essentially Lovett as lounge singer; duetting with star guests (Randy Newman on his Toy Story song "You've Got A Friend In Me") and crooning Sinatra standards ("Summer Wind").
Although Lovett is in good voice, particularly on the gospel song "Pass Me Not", a covers album is a waste of such a literate songwriting talent.

PONTIAC is a wonderful example of how multi-talented an individual Lyle Lovett is. Beginning with the charming "If I Had a Boat," PONTIAC takes a listener on a journey through the many different song styles, all of which Lovett is a master of.
Lovett plumbs the depths of a man's soul on the noir tales of "L.A.County" and "Pontiac" and then just as easily creates a sense of fun and exasperation on "Give Back my Heart" and "She's No Lady." PONTIAC captures a master songwriter at the top of his game with haunting lyrics and memorable tunes.
Shifting easily from Texas twangs to big band sounds, Lovett creates a sound that encapsulates the true range of the what is known as "country," and he does it better than most.

Such as it is, you're reminded of Lovett's strengths--his wry voice and heartfelt emoting--and that he contributed his chops to quality songs for Toy Story ("You've Got a Friend in Me") and Stuart Little ("Walking Tall").
Lovett's take on "Straighten Up and Fly Right" (from Dear God) and a duet with Keb' Mo' ("Till It Shines" from Mumford) also make this disc worthwhile, even if it is, overall, an odd effort, a little innocuous and has the smell of contract fulfiller.

Lyle Lovett is ready to answer the question on the minds of his fans: Why did it take him seven years to release "My Baby Don't Tolerate," an album of new, original songs?
