Lyle Mays - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
His albums as a leader reflect a large variety of musical interests: "Lyle Mays" and "Street Dreams" expand the ideas of the Pat Metheny Group, while "Fictionary" is a straight-ahead jazz trio session featuring Marc Johnson on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums.
As a composer Mays is interested in the complex form, expanding the motifs and most often building suspense by gradation and ascension.
Mays' oeuvre is disappointingly small; critics evince frustration with a talent such as his (manifested on "Fictionary") laying fallow.

Lyle Mays: Well, Pat came up with that title and I thought it was a pretty clever way of letting people know that the notes you're hearing are all coming from the piano.
Lyle Mays: Yes and no. I mean, all the sort of prepared piano samples...the real sound-effecty things were things that I made from samples that I had recorded out in LA. There are times when I'll use a commercial patch on a synth, but I usually alter it in some way.
Lyle Mays: Starting with around the time of 'First Circle,' we started doing more complete composing before we'd go on the road…mainly because we were getting heavily involved with sequencers, drum machines and trying to integrate that technology.

In the four square major modes of "Ozark" and "It's for You" you can hear the beige tinge of the American experience that melded with African American music to give the U.S. its musical depth and breadth, while "September Fifteenth" is a prayerful, ruminative reflection on the spirit of their romantic forebear, pianist Bill Evans.
The jewel of the crown is to my mind, September Fifteenth (dedicated to Bill Evans' memory), in which we admire the warmth and simple but expressive tribute paid for Pat and Lyle Mays.
