  VHS MSS: Lyman E. Knapp
Lyman E. Knapp, son of Hiram and Elvira (Stearns) Knapp, was born in Somerset, Vermont, November 5, 1837, and died in Seattle, Washington, October 9, 1904.
Knapp served as clerk of the Vermont House of Representatives 1872-1873, and as a Representative in 1886-1887.
Knapp was appointed Governor of the Territory of Alaska by President Benjamin Harrison on April 12, 1889, and served for four years.

Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, part III, pp 99-100 Lyman E. KNAPP, of Sitka [Sitka County], Alaska, son of Hiram and Elvira (STEARNS) KNAPP, was born in Somerset [Windham County, Vermont], 05 November 1837.
He was the fourth in direct line of descent from Captain Joseph KNAPP, of Taunton [Bristol County], Massachusetts, who commanded a company in Colonel TITCOMB's regiment during the War of the Revolution.

KNAPP, COL. LYMAN E., was born in Somerset, Windham county, Vt., November 5, 1837, and was the fifth in a family of nine children.
The latter was born September 10, 1804, in Marlboro, Vt. Hiram Knapp was a farmer by occupation.
Lyman E. Knapp, the subject of this sketch, lived until eighteen years of age at Stratton, and worked on his father's farm while attending the district school of the place.

By his first wife he had one daughter, Weltha, and six sons, Silas, Hoses H. Lemuel, Lyman, Zadock B., and Thomas C., after which his wife died, and in the course of time he married a widow Tyler who had four children, three daughters and one son.
Their names were, Nathan, Enos, Israel, Anna, Sophrona, and I think some others.
Benjamin lived on the Lyman Morris farm, now owned by Murray Doughty, I recollect that when he was living there about 1824, there was a Methodist camp meeting held on the west part of the farm in the woods, which was the first camp meeting I ever attended.

He represented the town of Lyman in 1874-75, and was chosen one of the county commissioners for Grafton county in 1879, 1880, 1881 and 1882.
Enos married twice, first, Lois Hibbard, and second Sally Clark of Landaff, in 1824, who bore him four sons.

He took 300 acres of land for which he paid with the bounties received for the destruction of wild animals, $60 for each wolf and $75 for each panther, of the latter of which he killed eleven in one year.
Enos M. Johnston, a banker and merchant in Afton, but a resident of Bettsburgh, is a grandson of John and son of Henry Johnston, the latter of whom was a lumber dealer, speculator and oil stock dealer, and acquired considerable wealth.
Enos M. JOHNSTON, who had previously kept a small grocery, opened a store after Grant's failure, and traded several years, until his store in Afton was opened.
