Lyman Hall was formerly Lyman Gymnasium, named for Daniel W. Lyman 1865, who bequeathed the University $50,000 in 1887 for a building which was to be named for him.
Lyman’s bequest with other contributions was sufficient to cover the $66,000 cost of building and equipping the gymnasium, which was completed in November 1891.
In 1972, when Lyman Hall was vacated by the ROTC, a team from the architectural firm of Sasaki, Dawson, DeMay Associates of Watertown, Massachusetts, recommended that the building be renovated for an experimental theatre and that the adjoining Colgate Hoyt Pool be made into a dance studio.

When Lyman Hall signed the Declaration of Independence, he was 52 years old--twice as old as George Walton and over a decade older than Button Gwinnett.
Hall labored to secure clothing, medicine and provisions for the army; and conferred with General Washington and his aides on military plans.
Hall later moved his residence to Savannah, and served as a judge of the Inferior Court of Chatham County.

Lyman Hall was a native of Connecticut, where he was born about the year 1731.
Fortunately for the cause of liberty, on the 15th of July, 1775, the convention of Georgia acceded to the general confederacy, and proceeded to the appointment of five delegates to congress, three of whom attended at the adjourned meeting of that body, September 13, 1775.
On this event, Doctor Hall removed his family to the north, and suffered the confiscation of all his property by the British government established in the state.
