Barium and Compounds (CASRN 7440-39-3), IRIS, Environmental Protection Agency
The incidences of lymphoma leukemia and lung tumors in the male (7/37 and 4/37, respectively) and female (5/21 and 3/21) mice exposed to barium were not significantly different from the incidences in the control mice (males: 3/38 for lymphoma leukemia and 5/38 for lung tumors; females: 3/47 and 9/47, respectively).
In this study, fibrous pneumonia and necrosis of the mucous membrane of the large bronchi was observed 9 mo after animals received an intratracheal dose of 50 mg barium carbonate (35 mg barium).
In males, longevity (defined as the mean life span of the last surviving 5 animals of each sex in each treatment group) was significantly (p=0.025) reduced at 815 days for barium-treated males as compared with 920 days for the controls.

 ASPCA Poison List
Because poisoning often results in the secondary poisoning of non-target animals, toxic substances to control rodents should be used only as a last resort, and then with great precaution.
The herbicide 2,4-D, a component in Agent Orange used by many lawn treatment companies, is associated with canine malignant lymphoma, a cancer.
The majority of poisonings related to these chemicals are due to improper use, especially when many different types of insecticides are used at the same time.

Thomas Hodgkin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1823, Hodgkin qualified for his M.D. at Edinburgh with a thesis on the physiological mechanisms of absorption in animals.
Hodgkin described the disease that bears his name (Hodgkin's lymphoma) in 1832, in a paper titled On Some Morbid Appearances of the Absorbent Glands and Spleen.
He is now best known for the first account of Hodgkin's disease, a form of lymphoma and blood disease, in 1832.

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) and renal failure remain significant causes of morbidity and mortality in children with newly diagnosed Burkitt's lymphoma and high white blood cell count acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) despite conventional management with aggressive hydration, alkalinization, allopurinol, and the slow introduction of chemotherapy.
We evaluated the prospective use of continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH), in addition to conventional management to prevent renal failure from tumor lysis, in three children with advanced abdominal Burkitt's lymphoma and in two children with high white blood cell count T-cell ALL who were at very high risk based on LDH and urine output.
At the end of reperfusion, there was a significant drop in sodium excretion by the right (intact circulation) kidney of the treated animals.

Cancer Control and Population Sciences: Current Research
In this animal model system, we will assess the usefulness of lymphokine administration on the survival rates of mice injected with either the fibrosarcoma or the T cell lymphoma, and we will also measure in vitro cytotoxic responses of lymphoctyes/macrophages recovered from treated and control animals.
The T cell lymphoma may be of particular value in demonstrating not only the potential usefulness but also the possible limitations of lymphokine therapy since a tumor of lymphoid origin may respond to lymphocyte products and to immunosurveillance differently than a tumor of non-lymphoid origin.
The lymphokines, Inteleukin-2, (T cell growth factor), gamma interferon and beta interferon are potent regulators of the immune response as shown by their capacity to enhance cytotoxic T cell, natural killer cell and macrophage tumoricidal responses in vitro.

 7/13/04, Research Roundup - Almanac, Vol. 51, No. 1
By comparing a portion of the MYH16 gene sequence in humans to that in five other animals-quantifying the so-called molecular clock-the researchers calculated that the inactivating mutation appeared in a hominid ancestor about 2.4 million years ago, after the lineages leading to humans and chimpanzees diverged.
Funding for the study, was provided through research grants from the AFCRI, Cancer Research Institute (CRI), and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America.
To determine whether the mutation was a rare form of an active gene and not a mistake introduced by the technical nature of the investigation, the team tested DNA samples from geographically disparate human populations.

Viral Survivor: Science News Online, Aug. 3, 2002
Epstein-Barr virus appears to cause at least two malignancies common in specific locations: Burkitt's lymphoma, a B cell cancer frequently found in Africa, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a tumor in the back of the throat that's the most common cancer among men in many parts of Asia.
Resolving such questions is a challenge, he points out, because the virus doesn't infect mice or other laboratory animals in which investigators can easily test their theories.
Studies have also linked the virus to other lymphomas in people with a weakened immune system and gastric carcinoma—a cancer of the lining of the stomach.

Combination Therapy Drives Cancer Into Remission
A two-drug combination therapy, published in tomorrow's issue of the journal Nature, led to the complete remission of a mouse model of B-cell lymphoma in all of the treated animals.
Therefore, the combination therapy outlined by the new study is a promising general strategy for treating many cancers that are refractory to current therapies.
Personalized cancer therapy, still in its infancy, involves profiling the genetic lesions within a patient's tumor cells at the level of DNA or protein and using the resulting profile to select the best drug or drug combination for treatment.
