  Lynn Abbey
Author Lynn Abbey is best known for her role, along with ex-husband Robert Asprin, in creating, editing, and contributing to the Thieves World anthologies.
Lynn Abbey was born in Peekskill, the Hudson River Valley of New York, a distinction which she shares with Mel Gibson and Paul Reubens.
Abbey scrapped her plans to acquire a Ph.D. in the field when a school advisor apprised her of the limited career options then available to Ph.D. in her field.

SF REVIEWS.NET: Out of Time / Lynn Abbey
And though it might seem a disservice to Abbey to suggest that after 20-odd years of trying she's finally gotten it right, it might be more diplomatic to suggest that maybe she's finally found the right type of story to let her talents bloom.
But Abbey's biggest coup here is the character of Emma herself, the most real heroine Abbey has ever created, and one whom it is easy to surmise may be something of an alter-ego.
Emma is Abbey's triumph (particularly compared to such gratingly loathsome characters as Jerlayne or Berika of The Wooden Sword), and I hope to see this kind of heart in future Abbey stories now that she's getting this good at it.

Lynn: My parents might say that I started telling stories when I learned to talk and decided that I'd become a writer the day I recognized a typewriter, but my professional career began in early 1977 when I was recuperating from an auto accident.
Lynn: It was a lot of fun and it was more than three authors, it was three authors and several hundred characters.

SF REVIEWS.NET: The Wooden Sword / Lynn Abbey
Abbey wants us to sympathize with her by ruthlessly depicting all her beatings and implied rapes by her vile husband; but when Dart retrieves the titular weapon from a magical tree and finally does the creep in, she's suddenly afraid of him.
But Berika actually grows more loathsome; Abbey herself even describes her as a "snarling girl," leaving me to wonder why the hell she thought any reader would find Berika a sympathetic fantasy heroine in the first place.
At times like these it is hard to tell whether or not this is a case of of Berika's being an idiotic character, or Abbey simply having her head up her ass as a writer.

 Science Fiction Book Reviews
But Thieves' World is a "first": Its creators, writer/editors Lynn Abbey and Robert Asprin, fashioned the first fantasy world deliberately designed for other authors to write about.
After an absence of 13 years, Thieves' World returned in 2002 under the guidance of co-creator Lynn Abbey, who relaunched the series with her novel Sanctuary and the anthology Turning Points.
Lynn Abbey's "Introduction," intended to orient readers new to Thieves' World, overburdens them with the names and nicknames of just about every cult, gang, ethnicity and empire ever to pass through Sanctuary.

The SF Site Featured Review: Thieves' World: Turning Points
Once she had set the stage, Abbey turned the city over, once again, to the authors who had made such a mess of it once before.
Although most of the Dyareelans were ousted from Sanctuary prior to the opening of Abbey's novel, some still remain and Selina Rosen's warrior woman Kadasah has set her sights on their extermination in "Ritual Evolution." Perhaps more than any other story, Rosen's deals with Sanctuary-wide politics instead of merely focusing on the individual.
Although Abbey does not feature any of the characters from the original series, she does demonstrate that some of their relics still survive in Sanctuary to either do harm or good, depending on who finds them and how they choose to make use of them.

 Sanctuary
Sanctuary is a city that has been abandoned by empires, wizards, and gods; if a type of crime exists, it has probably been committed in Sanctuary several dozen times.
