Lynn Varley also does all kinds of things in the coloring, from Expressionist lighting to a panel of the Batsignal in art deco lighting that may be the most beautiful panel I've ever seen in a comic.
I've seen both Miller and Varley accused of being careless, but a lot of that is lack of context on the part of some readers, to be honest.
The deliberate use of loose rendering, color un-aligned with borders, and the like are all well-established features of art outside comics.

Now Frank and Lynn are married, so perhaps this is what's holding Frank back from slapping Lynn silly and telling her to go back to th old paint pots.
You see, for DK2, Lynn decided that she would take this oppurtunity to practice Computerised Colouring FOR THE FIRST TIME.
If there's anything that will turn people away from this book it's the absolutely atrocious colouring job, which is doubly a shame when you've seen how fantastic Lynn's work can be when she's holding a brush.

LYNN VARLEY - First, Dark Knight; then, Electra Lives Again - which is quite possibly the best colored book ever.
No offense is intended to the creators or the fans, but DKSA was NOT Frank or Lynn's best effort (IMHO).
But in the end, my feeling is it was just a big sloppy mess, and Varley seemed to be using the entire project as a means of teaching herself how to use photoshop.

Frank Miller weaves a tale of honor, valor, and glory and what that meant back in 480 B.C. Lynn Varley does an amazing job with color as usual.
ItÕs always nice to look at art done by hand after looking at comic after comic full of computer generated color and effects.
There are a few panels here that put Varley in the same class as Hopper, which is reason enough to get hold of this book.
