The idea for a portable Atari console first came up in 1981 in the form of the Atari 2200; a smaller-sized 2600 that would have the advantage of being self-contained and not requiring it to be wired up to a TV screen.
Atari seized the opportunity and bought the full rights to the Handy, renaming it Lynx and releasing it two years later.
The Lynx II was backward-compatible with all Lynx games and was later advertised as being able to communicate directly with the upcoming 64-bit Jaguar.

Atari's one and only entry in to the handheld console market, the Atari Lynx was a far superior unit that holds it's own (and is in many way considered suprior) even with todays Game Boy Colors and NeoGeo Pocket's.
The Lynx was a bit larger than the Lynx II, had mono instead of stereo sound (including in the headphone jack), and had a 5 minute auto-shutoff.
The lynx had 64k of ram, and was capable of adressing up to 2 megabytes of gamecard rom (though most available games are 128k-512k).
