Lyric Pieces - Edvard Grieg - Piano Society
Short, lyric character pieces were very much in vogue in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, especially so in Scandinavia.
Edward Grieg was an undisputed master of the genre, and his ten books of Lyric Pieces, with a total of 66 items, span the better part of his composing career.
With some exceptions, the Lyric Pieces are of small scale and modest ambition, which has ensured them a prominent place in every amateur pianists' repertoire.

 Lyric Pieces Information
Lyric Pieces (Norwegian: Lyriske stykker) is a collection of 66 small to medium sized pieces for solo piano written by Edvard Grieg.
He was so fond of it that he used it to complete the cycle in his very last lyric piece, Remembrances (Efterklang) — this time in waltz form.
In 2002, Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes recorded a CD with 24 of the lyric pieces on Grieg's own 1892 Steinway grand piano at Troldhaugen, the composer's residence.

Bådnlåt (At the Cradle), lyric piece for piano, Op.
Grieg's fittingly titled Lyric Pieces are miniature musical portraits, epigrammatic works of charming simplicity, melodic invention, whimsy, and delight that in the space of just a few bars create individual worlds of enchantment.
Andsnes's new disc makes the perfect complement to his 1992 selection of Lyric Pieces (from which happily only three items are duplicated) and to Emil Gilels's still classic survey.

The pianist obviously selected the pieces with which he felt the strongest identification, and he plays them lovingly, with sprightly rhythms and a rich, singing tone.

I balladetone (Ballad), lyric piece for piano, Op.
Here, however, he turned his attention to pieces that pose few technical challenges and that are most often played by student pianists (if at all).
His sparkling yet always serious and supersensitive approach to this music shows that Grieg's aptly named Lyric Pieces are actually miniature masterpieces; each is a tiny tone painting full of fantasy, melodic charm, and disarming simplicity.
