 [No title]
Pharmacology d-Lysergic acid diethylamide is a synthetic hallucinogen derived from an extract of the ergot fungus.
Lysergic increases serotonin in the brain and one suggestion is that when the serotonin re-uptake is blocked in the brain, there is an increased stimulation of 5-HT1 and 5- HT2 receptors.
The conversion of the lysergic acid in the mixed anhydride occurs within a relatively short time, but to insure a complete conversion the reaction is allowed to proceed for about one to three hours.

 R. B. Woodward's Total Synthesis of Lysergic Acid - [www.rhodium.ws]
Lysergic acid, the basic fragment derived from the ergot alkaloids, has been synthesized in a fifteen-stage sequence beginning with 3-beta-carboxyethylindole.
With ethylene glycol and toluenesulfonic acid, the aldehyde was converted to the ethylene acetal 53, which was smoothly oxidized by perbenzoic acid to the oxide 54.
The acid chloride was prepared in the customary manner from 23.3g of (0.1mol) of 1-acetyl-3-[beta- carboxyethyl]-2,3-dihydroindole and 50ml (0.698mol) of thionyl chloride.

Lysergic acid compounds are unstable to heat, light and oxygen.
Derivatives of LSD (besides LSA/LA-111 and lysergic acid) are not scheduled, but would be prosecutable under the designer drugs act after testimony from a DEA agent that _in their opinion_ the defendant was planning to distribute them.

 LSA (Lysergic Acid Amide)
Although LSD does not occur in nature, a close analogue, lysergic acid amide (LSA, ‘‘ergine’’;) is found in the seeds of Argyreia nervosa (Hawaiian baby woodrose) and Ipomoea violacea (morning glory).
Ergine, also known as d-lysergic acid amide, LSA, and LA-111, is an alkaloid of the ergoline family that occurs in various species of vines of the Convolvulaceae and some species of fungi.
As the dominant alkaloid in the hallucinogenic seeds of Rivea corymbosa (ololiuhqui), Argyreia nervosa (Hawaiian baby woodrose) and Ipomoea violacea (tlitliltzin), it is often stated that ergine and/or isoergine (its optical isomer) is responsible for the hallucinogenic activity.
