MASH (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MASH is a 1970 satirical American dark comedy film directed by Robert Altman, based extremely loosely on the novel written by Richard Hooker.
MASH features the song "Suicide is Painless", with music by Johnny Mandel and lyrics by Mike Altman, the director's son.
MASH was the original title of the 1953 film Battle Circus starring Humphrey Bogart, a film also about life in a MASH unit.

When the movie had premiere at January 25, 1970 in New York, mouth propaganda was that strong, that people waited for hours and several blocks, despite a blizzard and temperatures of -15 degress Celsius.
Nevertheless M*A*S*H is now considered a cult movie, not at last because of the success of a tv series, which by the way Altman (like Hornberger) never liked.
And one record is undoubtly held by the movie M*A*S*H: It is the war movie with the fewest shots fired.

The pendulum has swung back a lot since 1970, and for that you still get a sense of the pioneering spirit with which the film was made.
You have a powerful beginning, that eerie montage with the strange song "Suicide Is Painless" playing mournfully while doctors, nurses, and orderlies silently rush to relieve choppers of their human cargo.
It's quietly effective, immediately giving you a sense of the 4077th MASH unit (looking much bigger and grimmer than it ever did in the TV series) and coming as close as the movie ever does to delivering an effective anti-war statement.

Altman's insistence on overlapping the characters' dialogue, photographing the film with fog filters and sloppy zooms, and a frank combination of jarringly graphic surgery footage with cynical humor, resulted in a timeless comedy that reflects the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Politics aside, M*A*S*H is a classic motion picture that skyrocketed Altman to the upper ranks of Hollywood directors.
