 [KS] Re: Mori's cockamie ideas
I think you're right, there were and still are debates to replace the official language, even in Holland they wanted to replace the official language at universities for English (recently) French (beginning last century) Latin being the official one.
REPLY sends your message to the whole list __________________________________________ > In any case, the point is that Mori Arinori's suggestion that the Japanese > switch to English was not out of step with other debates in other places.

 manx_language.asp
Manx is one of six Celtic languages, the others being Irish, Scots Gaelic, Welsh, Breton and Cornish.
A Brythonic language was spoken in the Island before Gaelic; it was not until about 500 AD that Gaelic came here, probably with Irish invaders.
Up until the 1800s English, although it would be used for trade and administration purposes, was a foreign language to most Manx people.  However, due to economic, social and political pressures, the language suffered an enormous decline, to such an extent that by 1961 only 165 people claimed to speak the language.

Introduction to Literacy and Script Reform in Occupation Japan: Reading Between the Lines
If Mori had had his way, they note disapprovingly, the Japanese would have discarded their own native language just as they used Buddhist images for firewood (to the dismay of Ernest Fenollosa) and woodblock prints for packing paper (which is how the prints first made their way to Paris and the Impressionists).
Mori Arinori, who became Japan's first Minister of Education in 1885, is a prime example.
"Mori Arinori and the élite that he represented found their long-cherished Japanese sociolinguistic preserve more and more threatened by invasion from the rest of Japanese society.

eyestorm - article - Mariko Mori
Mori draws analogies between what is articulated in fiction, language, and visuality, and points to a tug-of-war between her identity as a Japanese woman and her entrance into a milieu of global culture and electronic, urban multiplicity.
Mori's fascination with the construction of artifice, and her rigorous attention to detail, may be traced to her early training at the Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo.
Mori as virtual subject or a narrative that never was, a phenomenological locale that situates the human and the technological as codependent and mutually defining.

 Ikue Mori: Mysterious Soundscapes
Mori began her career as an untutored drummer in the seminal no wave group DNA, than transformed herself into an improviser who juggles an array of interconnected drum-machines and samplers, and again into a laptop computer player who no longer bases her musical language on rhythmic conceptions.
Mori's inquisitive approach to sound manages to deconstruct and reconstruct sounds that may (or may not) originate from such sources such as a disjointed electric cello, a broken mini-Casio keyboard, or a short-circuit electronic from-kit, but their computerized mutations transform them into totally fresh sounds.
But Mori also succeeded generating new textures from her computer that sound surprisingly organic and personal, far from the electronic drones or abstract blizzards of otherworldly pulsating soundscapes so common with musicians who are adding electronics to their musical vocabulary.

This module introduces students to the writings of four major authors of the transitional period -- Higuchi Ichiyô, Natsume Sôseki, Mori Ôgai, and Akutagawa Ryûnosuke -- and through them illustrates the development of the modern written language of Japan.
Over the last two centuries, the Japanese written language has changed immensely.

It’s All Double Janglish to Me
Indeed, it was even suggested by Arinori Mori, the first Minister of Education in the Meiji Era, that English should become the official language of Japan and that the Chinese characters and Japanese syllabaries used to write Japanese should be abandoned.
Needless to say, Mori’s proposals came to nothing, but if he were to suddenly find himself transported to modern Japan, he could be forgiven for believing that a later minister had been more succesful in anglicising Japanese.
Many of the loan words that came into Japanese at that time were associated with the world’s most advanced nations and naturally took on a certain prestige.
