Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi, the 'nightingale' of Carnatic music, started her career by singing in temples before becoming one of the best-known artistes in her field during her lifetime, enthralling audiences all over the world, including the Carnegie Hall in London and at the United Nations.
Subbulakshmi's first movie Sevasadanam was released in 1938 in which she acted as a poor girl married to a rich old man. It was followed by Shakuntalai in which she played the lead, a glamorous role teaming her with G N Balasubramanian, the most attractive intellect of that time.
MS maintained her image as a glamour queen until the release of Meera in 1945 both in Tamil and Hindi.

The doyen of Carnatic music M S Subbulakshmi died in Chennai on Saturday night of broncho pneumonia and cardiac irregularities, according to hospital and family sources.
Born as Kunjamma in the temple city of Madurai on September 16, 1916, Subbulakshmi made her debut as a singer at the age of eight and went on to perform in concerts, a domain traditionally reserved for males.
A globetrotter, 'MS', as she was popularly known, was the first woman to be awarded the 'Sangita Kalanidhi' by the Madras Music Academy.

Publically venerated as one of the twentieth century's finest South Indian classical musicians in the Carnatic tradition, she was privately adored as an example of piety, humility, devotion and uncommon marital loyalty.
Although Subbulakshmi's portrayal of Sage Narada was magnificent, it was the film Meera which bestowed upon her the image of a saintly musician.
Whether Subbulakshmi is singing a South Indian classical composition, a popular Hindi bhajana or a Sanskrit sloka set to music, her voice is so filled with devotion listeners can't help thinking she must be a saint.

She gave her first recital at the tender age of 10, when she was asked to sing at the wedding of a Saurashtra friend of the family in Madurai.
MS is the first woman recipient of the 'Sangita Kalanidhi' title and the first one to popularise Carnatic music in North India and in the West at prestigious venues (Edinburgh Festival and the UN).

M.S. was, interestingly, the first to perform her genre of music and the Edinburgh Festival (1963) and in the United Nations (1966).
M.S. had the great honor of singing the favorite Bhajan of Mahatma Gandhi —when she stated hesitantly that she had never once rendered the song, Gandhi, who valued her this much, requested that she “speak the song for him”.
Sadly, M.S. died in the midst of her eight decade on December 11th, 2004.
