  Britain.tv Wikipedia - Motorway
Motorways are highways designed to carry a large volume of traffic where a normal road would not suffice or would be unsafe, usually between cities.
Motorway junctions are usually given a number, indicated in the UK and Ireland with a white number of a fl background in the corner of signs approaching that junction.
In Ireland, the M1, M4, and M50 are all tolled, with sections of the M6, M7 and M8 likely to face tolls also in the future.

Proposed Re-Numbering of Northern Ireland Motorway and Junction Numbers - Northern Ireland Roads Site
The motorways either in existance or being planned in the Republic of Ireland are the M1, M3, M4, M6, M7, M8, M9, M11 and M50.
The M1 would have to be re-numbered if it was subsuming the Westlink, and given that similar numbering problems exist on the M2, the opportunity could be taken to re-number all the motorway junctions at the same time, in order to minimise confusion for road users.
M1 junctions 9 and 10 are reserved for a future southern junction between Belfast and Lisburn and possible service area, while junction 14 is reserved for a possible junction for the National Stadium.

The M50 motorway is a motorway and National Primary Route in the Republic of Ireland running in a C-shaped ring around the northern, western and southern sides of the capital city, Dublin.
One end of the route is located north-east of the city, with a connection to the M1 motorway (running north to Belfast).
Work commenced in early 2006 on upgrading the earlier sections of motorway, with the current grade-separated signal-controlled roundabout interchanges to be replaced with free-flowing "spaghetti junctions", and much of the road to be widened to three lanes in each direction.
