Minigun - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The ancestor to the modern minigun was made in the late 19th-century, when Richard J. Gatling replaced the hand crank mechanism of a rifle caliber Gatling gun with one of the relatively new electric motors.
The GE 7.62x51mm Minigun has been used in gun pod applications by the United States and with purpose-built mounting hardware used on the aforementioned fixed wing gunship aircraft.
It was a scaled-down version of the M134, firing 5.56mm NATO ammunition, the same as the M16 rifle.

Miniguns are weapons designed to deliver vast quantities of ammunition on a target at a high rate of fire, through the use of the Gatling principle.
The M134 saw extensive use in Vietnam mounted on Huey gunships, and is primarily used today on a large number of US Special Operations helicopters.
In theory, one of these miniguns could be carried and fired by a single shooter at 1,000-2,000 rpm, if he could lift the gun + ammo + batteries (around 80 lbs).

A minigun is a multi-barreled machine gun with a high rate of fire, employing Gatling style rotating barrels to prevent overheating.
The minigun is composed of six closed-bolt rifle barrels arranged in a circular housing.
A real minigun (at 4000rpm) would consume 1,300 rounds of 7.62 mm ammo, weighing over 100lbs (55kg.) Although not an unrealistic load for a muscle-bound soldier, it is doubtful that such a burdensome weapon-system would be carried behind enemy lines, on foot.

The second was that in the movie, the power for the Minigun had been supplied by a pair of truck batteries through a cable that simply ran over the ground, and up into the Minigun.
With the rate of fire of a minigun, you'd probably expect something in the way of 2800lbs (i forget how recoil is measured, i think its lbs) in the way of recoil.
On Miniguns themselves the reason they are refered to as GE guns is because they were origninally all spun buy a General Electric Motor (other brands are used as well now) running off of the batteries.

M134 7.62mm Minigun Machine Gun   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
The 7.62mm M134 Minigun machine gun is based on the Gatling gun principle in which a high rate of fire is achieved by having a number of rotating barrels which fire in turn when the 12 o'clock position is reached.
The Minigun is driven by a 28 V DC or 11 5 V AC electric motor and produces a steady rate of fire which varies according to type from between 2000 and 6000 rds/min as a top rate, down to 300 rds/min as the slowest rate of fire.
Since the entire gun is driven by an external source, a misfired round is simply ejected and thrown down the large section hose with the empties either into a box or, more usually, out over the side.
